Mining problem.

Hi.
just wondering what I am doing wrong to cause this.
I have gone back to mining and specced me a shiny new T10 which is working fairly well (needs a bit of engineering to make more responsive)
However. I can't work out why but I would say about 1 in 4 of my prospectors do not work.

I fire the trigger, the prospector launches but it just dies on launch and fires off a lump of scrap. how do I avoid this or is it a bug?

thanks.

PS the ARX earning with mining is absolutely terrible. about 8 hrs of mining and all I have managed is around 120ARX

Are you moving when you launch the prospector?
yeah but only slowly (it's a T10 with the cargo scoop down, it doesn't do fast!)
however is this the issue? if so good to know thanks however I used to mine a lot back in the day and I don't remember that being a problem. (and that was in a much faster moving clipper)

There are issues with some ships and prospector limpets colliding with the ship and breaking when launched how fast you are going when the limpet is launched seems to be a critical factor.
I tend to deploy the scoop to help bring the speed down before trying to launch a prospector.

It has been a while since I mined so I don’t recall the safe speed which probably wouldn’t help as I haven’t used the T10 for mining.

There are various factors in play for launching prospectors, like speed of the ship, position of the hatch, shape of the ship, position of hardpoints, so you get different results with different ships and you have to adjust what you do to match. Try upthrusting a bit as the limpet comes out.

I'm a T10 laser miner, this is my Combat T10 build (if it helps).
Basilisk

I fly around with 4 pips in weapons and 1 in sys/eng, scoop lowered i plod along at around 110 and launch prospectors mainly without an issue.
Sometimes they fire but don't actually release a limpet, tried with scoop up and down, slowed to 50 and stopped, my conclusion is its a bug.
Happens a lot in my T8 core miner.

Sounds like the T10 may have special behaviour/issues (haven't yet tried it myself). When I lose prospectors in my Python it's usually associated with going too fast (e.g. 200 m/s) or pushing the nose downwards just after firing.

Move sideways while targeting.
The important thing is don't move forward only, the limpets are to slow.
Btw for quick weekly arx: go material trader :)

It's because the T10 is broken, has been since the day it arrived and FDev don't seem at all interested in fixing it.

They're happy to fiddle the size of the CM5 so it'll fit on a small pad, and fiddle the wings of the Mandalay so it can get into places it shouldn't but, apparently, doing a similar thing with part of the underside of the T10, so it can launch limpets reliably, is just not happening.

If you're flying perfectly straight and level, you can launch a prospector reliably from a T10 at up to ~40m/sec.
Any faster and the limpet's trajectory causes it to collide with the hull and kills it.
And, of course, if you're pitching up or down, when you launch a limpet, that just makes things worse.

People who like the T10 (including me) will tell you that it's "not a big deal" because, once you start mining, you're likely to be stationary, waiting for your collectors to gather ore, when you point your ship at other 'roids and launch prospectors.
Also, if you have a PDist engineered for weapon-focused (to power a heap of mining lasers) and you have your pips set 4weps/2sys/0thr the T10 will fly slowly enough that you can launch limpets reliably.

So, if you really want to fly a T10 miner, it's do-able.
OTOH, it's simply much, much easier just to scrap the T10 and replace it with a Cutter/Corvette or Annie.
You really shouldn't be using a T10 for deep-core mining, anyway, so I'm assuming we're talking about laser mining, in which case ALL of those three do it much more easily than a T10, unfortunately.

Its not all the time, I'm happily scooting around as we speak launching prospectors at 110 speed.
I have a cutter and an Annie, they don't come close, the view alone from the T10 just makes it the best imo, i also have a multi miner T10, the hardpoint placements actually don't make it too bad at Core if its needed.

But then i am completely biased :ROFLMAO:

thanks. it's a tough one because I am trying to find a use for all my ships and whilst I suppose I could build a combat T10, to me it just looks like a mining ship with attitude.

the truth is I could probably make more in my python ..... but that is my emergency rescue ship.

AHH well it's my problem I guess. thanks all for the info. for now I think I will have to get used to it but will take on board all the above.

For me its all about the view

Thing, for me, was that I got my T10 as soon as it arrived, I took it to Beagle Point and then spent 6 months travelling back all around the outer edge of the galaxy.
After I got back it sat in storage for about 6 months and then I tried to turn it into a RES-farming combat ship and, although it worked, I just felt like I could have been having more fun, and achieving the same result, in a normal combat ship.

Lakons are the "industrial" ships in ED and the slots & hardpoint make the T10, theoretically, THE best laser-mining ship in ED so that's what I did with it.
I put up with the shonky limpet-launching issue for about 5 years but, after taking 2 years off, I came back without the rose-tinted glasses of sentimentality and just thought "Eff this. This thing has got to go!"

The view from Lakon cockpits IS (IMO) the best in the game and, although that's often used to justify using a T10, you honestly don't need it when laser-mining.
Once you've launched a prospector and got a result, you can just be looking at the view ahead to select your next target while you're flying toward your current target.
If the next target doesn't work out, you can just keep on flying in the same direction and pick a different 'roid.
You don't need to be looking around, like you do when you're DC mining, because there's always another suitable 'roid somewhere right ahead of you.

Out of interest what are you using as a large laser miner now?

Dont know if this helps or not but this is what I do.
It should be noted I fly 100% fa-off.

Laser mining I slow down to about 50-70 and thrust up or left or right (anything but down) a bit then launch the prospector. ( I use a cutter for laser)
When core mining I tend to be moving much faster through the fields, so when I spot a rock I will most of the time line up to near miss it then flip so I am counter thrusting and fire the prospector when ive slowed (yet still traveling away from it). ( i use a krait II or a phantom, phantom is move manuverable and faster but has less cargo)

But yes the ship type matters especially the underside.
