I am a long time Elite player but due to a family situation I have been away from Elite for about 6 months. I am in need of some quick credits and was wondering if mining is still the fastest way to make some quick cash? If it is which mineral is the best to mine? Thanks.

Problem is not the mining, it's the selling. If you rely on public sources for finding good sales points, you'll need to be fast before pre-loaded carriers satisfy the demand.

As @Ashnak says, you do need to be quick to beat the FC's. However, if you are, platinum, osmium and painite are always good for a tidy profit. Paintite tends to be more volatile in terms of price, however. I tend to go for platinum primarily.

If you decide to go core mining, Alexandrite, Benitoite, Grandidierite,Low Temperature Diamonds, Monazite, Musgravite, Painite, Rhodplumsite and Void Opals will offer good returns (although a few of those can be more easily gleaned from laz0rz mining).

Keep in mind, though, that demand on these is usually pretty low - and the price you are offered will depend on how much of these you have in your hold. And that "volume tax" starts to bite when your hold holds ~10% of the demand on that station.

Grab a python, load it up with business class cabin’s.
go to Robigo system and Robigo mines. Its roughly 500lyrs outside the bubble.
Take every tourist mission to Sirius Atmospherics in the Sothis system . Take the tourist back to Robigo mines.
Takes about 15 minutes to complete the round trip missions. You can clear around 80-90million an hour. Sure gets boring real fast though.
But its good work for a quick cash fix.

for small reductions in pay, you can choose mission rewards that offer plenty of very rare items (such as exquisite focus crystals) you can use for engineering and trading.

After finishing some combat missions I was out mining last night and while working a painite hotspot in a pristine metallic ring, in roughly an hour or so, while i was filling an osmium contract I pulled about 100 tons of resources (plus mats) with 55 painite being the biggest haul (sold for roughly 5.5 mil). When i turned in my missions and cashed out the bounties and mining by-catch I was at about 80 million for the night.

For combat I grab some wing massacre missions and let them fill up as I complete non-wing and assassinate missions (threat 3 or 4) in a few different close systems. For mining I'll take some small volume missions (12-20 tons) and fill them at high value resource hotspots depending on the ring type.

My beluga, the Witch of November, is set up for all mining types so i can mine whatever deposit type I run into. Combat ship is a mid level engineered FDL.

or if you want to do it actively but with a beginner's ship. After a couple of trips, you'd be making at least 200 mil per hour in an unengineered Vulture. You can use a Sidewinder quite safely for the first trip as long as you only shoot the ships that the police are shooting:
