Mining Question

Does it matter whether you drop into a resource extraction zone or just randomly somewhere in the planetary rings. I swear I've had better finds inside the extraction zones but I don't know if it's just in my head. Plus those pesky pirates I'd like to avoid.

Well I've mined around planets that had two rings, inner metallic and outer rocky, and only the rocky ring had extraction sites, so I just dropped into the metallic one. Can't say I've done that much mining, but I've had two big sessions, one was dropping in, the other was at an extraction site, the only difference I noticed was more pirates in the designated extraction site.

I think the extraction sites are just a different place for hunting pirates next to nav beacons. I think the best place to mine is a random location at a pristine reserve metallic planet ring.

Are you confusing ring clusters (near nav beacons) with extraction sites? While I agree, pristine metallic rings are the best, I think resource extraction sites in those same rings give identical resources, there's just more pirates.

I never mine at the extraction site, too many pirates. I just drop into the same ring as the extraction site at some other location. I find I make more credits an hour that way rather than having to stop to kill a pirate every 5 minutes.

You can mine the rings of a planet?! How do you get to them without crashing?!

Fly to them in supercruise, get as close as you can, slow down to the safe disengage speed, and fly right into them. It will stop you without any damage as long as you're going slow enough.

Just fly up to them and you will drop out of SC just the same as if you fly straight at a planet.
Make sure not to be going too fast though or you will take hull damage.
I'm not sure what the cut off is for damage, I usually get close and then drop to 30k/s until I hit it, but I think a few hundred is ok.

Edit: Oops pipped to the answer, nm :)
