Mining: Questions and a dilemma

I have been reading as much as I can on this forum about mining, and have several questions.

1. Can I mine anywhere (rings, asteroid belts) or does it have to be in a resource area, and how do I get to the rings in a system
2. Are there specific systems that are better than others
3. Does it take a lot of time to mine
4. Is it worth the hassle or is trading better

Many thanks in advance.

Resource areas are highlighted once you get near to them - have to be quite close. Theyre also in the rings. Target then in SC and drop in on them in the same way you would a station or USS
2. Are there specific systems that are better than others
Yes, you want to aim for metallic content where you can find them
3. Does it take a lot of time to mine
Yes, its straightforward but you want to make sure you invest your time in only the best resources
4. Is it worth the hassle or is trading better
I'd say trading is faster if your have a decent cargo capacity.

I look at mining as more a roleplay activity. Its great to find a pristine metal source out in the void that no one knows about and its quite therapeutic chipping away at the rocks collecting almost pure profit but its something to do in the background while watching tv. Its also a nice break from trading / fighting from time to time.

Alright, so...

1. Yes, you can mine anywhere. You get to planetary rings by going to the planet, then flying into the ring. When you get close enough to the ring, you'll enter it, just like you would drop out of supercruise anywhere else.
2. There are specific systems better than others. The quality of ores goes Icy (unmineable), Rocky, Metal Rich, Metallic. The quantity of ores goes No Reserves, Low Reserves, Average Reservers, Major Reservers, and Pristine Reserves.
You want to look for Metallic, Pristine Reserves for the best stuff. I am told the type of star affects it as well, but haven't done research into it myself. I can suggest a few good places if you want.
3. This depends on how good you are at scooping, how many lasers you have, and how lucky you are with finding the ores and percentages you want. At my best with two lasers, I made about 200k an hour. I did not have the best setup, nor am I particularly lucky. I am also kinda shaky with scooping. It does take a while though. Even with a hauler, it can take 2-4 hours to fill 16+ slots.
4. Trading is TECHNICALLY better, especially since the update, but mining is close, I'd say. I think early game (ships smaller than Type-6) mining is as good as if not better than trading. Once you reach 100+ cargo space though, I think the time involved in mining ends up making it a slower credit-maker than trading.

Oh, and planetary rings are just simply better than belt clusters. You can get up to a couple hundred in a single cluster. You can get tens of thousands in even very small rings.

I like to avoid resource extraction sites myself and just go straight into the ring at a random point. More lonesome, but less likelihood of pirates, in my experience.

Also, I recommend listening to Louis Armstrong and that type of music. ESPECIALLY "La Vi En Rose" it is perfect for mining.

I don't know how you manage to mine in the background. I am never still for more than 5 seconds when mining.

On the topic of ore types. Shoot for Platinum, Palladium, and Gold. Silver is decent, but I never go any lower. My rule of thumb is no lower than 5/10/20/40% for Plat/Pall/Gold/Silver. Seems to work quite well for me.

Last time I checked galactic averages, Plat was around 18k, Palla was around 13k, Gold was around 10k, and Silver was around 5k.

If you find Beryllium, please tell me where you found it. I am no longer mining at this point, but I'd like to know for my records where the heck you find that stuff.

I tried mining, didn't like it.

You mine big rocks, you chip off tiny rocks, you have to manually scoop all the bits you chipped off, then you have to refine them. it's quite a tedious thing to do.

It really is entirely hit or miss when it comes to mining, I feel. Either you really enjoy it, or you end up thinking it's incredibly boring.

You'll know tedium when you mine in Eve-online. You just click on asteroids, click on the mining lasers and do absolutely nothing until done mining.

I like mining more than trading, i never really enjoyed trading in any game.. Right now i can make 150k+ an hour. I could make more if i could just find an metallic planetary ring with high %s

c0m4ndo45, try Njikan or Frey, I've had success with both.

I find mining in this to be a lot more interesting than mining in... well, pretty much any other game I've played with mining.

Especially Njikan. Smeaton Port buys above galactic average if I remember correctly.

I know it's High Tech though, with pretty much anything you could ask for in outfitting.

I found mining was a good way to build up a decent chunk of cash to start upgrading my ship and into trading the more profitable stuff right away. Even now I occasionally go back and do some just for the hell of it :)

ok, I just spent time going through 200 systems, a lot in uncharted space, and quite a few in Federation and Independent owned areas. I have found pristine rings, but they are metal rich. I just cannot find metallic to save my life. What am I doing wrong? I've been looking in grid -200:-56:0, to no avail. Some hints or pointers would really be welcome at this point. Thanks!

Location can be important for mining, the less distance you have to travel to get to a station which will buy your ore for above-galavg, the better.
A friend suggested to me that the type of star does affect what you are likely to find, but I have no idea if it's true.

I suggest first picking a system that will buy at decent prices (figured by what type of economy it is), then looking at it and nearby systems.

I've found metallic, pristine rings several times, way out in deep space, where it would be pointless to go to mine.
