mining questions

I going to give mining a try. I have a hauler with 16 bays a mining laser. even if a dock says it imports gold silver what ever, that don't mean it will always buy it from you rite?

and not every place pays the same. some pay more some less rite?

how do you find the best place to sell ?

thanks

Don't you also have to have an onboard device to process the raw ore? I haven't tried mining myself yet, but remember seeing some kind of utility device that went with mining.

Yeah you have a refinery module. I haven't done too much of it as it bored me half to death, but I believe that you can install multiple modules, and that you can process a single chunk of mined ore in each at a time.

The way mining seemed to work (and I am not an expert for sure) in most cases is that you fired your beam at a rock, it broke off a chunk which you scooped up. That chunk might be made up of one or more ores at various concentration percentages. You need to refine a total of 100% of an ore to get a single ton canister of the ore in your cargo hold. So if you happened to consistently get chunks with 20% bauxite and 80% uraninite, you'd need 5 of them to get 1 ton of bauxite, but only 1 and a bit to get 1 ton of uraninite. Note you can only refine a single ore type in a refining module at a time.

Refinery module - higher rating has more hoppers, larger size class ditto. A 1 hopper refinery only allows you to refine 1 resource, which means you need to make a choice if you're picking up rocks with multiple resources. I've found a 3 hopper is generally a minimum for frustration free mining, more is obviously better, as you don't need to discard partial tonnages when you switch between asteroids.

Perhaps a higher rating module would have saved my frustration - I may well return to that profession one day :)

Prices for metals and minerals do not deviate greatly. I'm more concerned with finding the nearest startport to sell them right after mining. Remember, it's all profit, so spending alot of time to go to a more distant port to make a few more CR/ton is, a waste of time.

Im at a belt cluster.. I am getting stuff. I thought. I read were you could tell what type of rock it is like metallic or what ever. when I target the rock it just says belt cluster

thanks

Look at the system map. When you click on the asteroid belt or planet ( of it is a ring) It will say whether it is metallic, metal rich, rocky, etc.

The system will also day if it is pristine or major reserves or depleted, etc.

Metallic is the way to go - more frequent and higher levels of precious metals than the rather confusingly named metal rich.

Freebie from the OBS&MC: Ngalites 5 A ring has pristine metallic reserves and Peters Gateway is a Coriolis station in-system that buys metals and minerals at good prices (avoid Tietjen Ring in the same system as it is an outpost and has queues). Hope it's in reasonable range, and try to arrive with, at least, a two-bin refinery as some of those rocks can be Gold/Palladium and there's nothing more frustrating than having to throw one of those away!

"Resources unallocated"

when I get a chunk of what ever it wont let me pick it up resources unallocated ?

You need to tell your refinery module how to process the ore. It's doen from the right-hand panels.
The first time you pick up a chunk of ore, tell the module what ore to process in which bin (multiple bins are a good thing). The next chunks you pick up will process automatically. There's more to it, but I just got started on it myself.

I have 2 bins but I don't think I assigned the ore. I found silver got attacked and was dead In two seconds. how do you stay alive when ever I stop too mine im get pummeled .

thanks for all the help ill plus rep all of yeas :_)

A hauler isn't the best choice for mining, given that it has one weapon slot and that's it. The rats have been very persistent of late. I'm a little perplexed by what I am seeing. One time I am all alone, the next I get more in bounties than by mining. It almost seems the security level is somewhat randomized each time you enter a field. haven't been to a resource spot yet, as I prefer quieter time so I can concentrate on not faceplanting my ship into an asteroid... again. DOH!

Well, good question. I haven't mined since release ( not since about gamma 2.02 actually), but I heard the devs jacked up the pirate spawn rate. A mistake in my opinion. I think they need to rebalance.

Anyone else care to comment?

I actually like this level of rats... it's like a bonus if you are prepared. Highest bounty in a field so far is over 40k and I've pulled over 80k on a couple trips. Hey, people should get to know their local miners if they want easy bounty hunting.:D

what ship is the best I got the hauler because I watched some dude on utube haul in a 200k payday. im having a hell of a time with interdictions. with this ship too

when I get interdicted, I cant seem to win one it takes to long for my drive to charge im a setting duck. I guess ill try a heat sink yea

More bins == always better. I have started with 3 and now I am on 7 which is finally enough to hold all types of mineral/metals available on my Pristine Metalic ring :). Also, two mining lasers (bigger==better) are must if you dont want to waste the time shooting roids... Moreover you can use rafinery bins as additional cargo hold - when are your racks full, you can fill your rafinery to 100% and withdraw it on base. that way I can haul 35 tons per run with my Cobra. If I am not extremly picky (not taking only most expensive minerals/metals) I am doing 200k cr per hour with such setup, but I think that it should be possible to at least double that revenue by searching for expensive, high yield roids....

I suggest a Cobra due to the 4 weapon slots and bodacious cargo space. I don't even have the full 32 spaces mounted and it works fine for me. I need a break more often and filling all 32 spaces takes a while. In any event, be prepared to run and reinitialize the instance by jumping out and back in to the location if the pirates are more than you want. That apparent randomness gives you a choice.

You could even upgrade a sidewinder with more cargo space... but that will fill up real fast unless you dump all but the best materials. Not sure how any others will work. It's only the sidey, hauler, and cobra I've tried to mine in.
