Mining. RES or ring ?

So, I was thinking of giving mining another go. Didn't get anywhere with it before but it looks to be more accessible with the drones.

So I've watched and read a few guides to figure out how to equip the ship and find the best site and they all agree except on one point...

Is the best place to mine in the RES (high intensity or not) or do you just drop out anywhere on the metallic ring?

Some say there's no difference while others swear the high intensity RES has better yields. What do you say? :S

If I am in a real hurry to get some high yield I visit the local hi res site, but try and keep away from the ships. Some times I am left alone other times they find me and I am hounded or have to leave.
I drop into the ring if I want to left alone or have plenty of time. Sometimes even going into rings some ships may spawn when you first enter. I usually deal with them immediately (or flee if its a strong wing) and then you see nothing for hours.

How do you find out if the planet is pristine? I've only seen "metallic" or "metal rich" by selecting the planet. When you select it is it called "pristine metallic planet" or do you find it in details elsewhere?

The Metallic or Metal Rich description applies to each ring. The pristine description is under the planet's description and applies to all the rings. Took me a while to find it.

Painite is pretty common in High RES. At least for me. I find always 6-12 painite per 2h of mining (5-15km from center of RES marker). Not sure, but is Feels that when being in range of res (where pirates spawns) that's a range of mining bonus.

Not been mining for long but when I was in a RES I would have to break off from mining every few minutes to despatch the suicidal pirates who attacked my Python and in the process invariably lose my position so I'd risk working on rocks I'd already cleaned out.

In a ring I never get disturbed by anybody and the yield seems if anything better per hour although probably not better per rock.

As ever YMMV, different ship, different load-out and any number of other criteria will mean your experience is different from mine. Try them both and see which you prefer.

No one is ever under any obligation to mine in inhabited space. Why not combine mining with a little exploring? You don't have to go far.

Go to Hi-RES. Once in the instance boost away from the beacon at least 100KM and begin mining there. Much more peaceful and I've only had one ghost contact with zero pirate interactions.

Deep space mining has more encounters IMHO.

This, this is what I agree with, combining exploration and mining can really help if you find one of them can eventually get a bit too much and you want to do something else. Plus it adds a lot more meaning to exploration when scanning a new system and you discover a pristine source.

My advice is to do a bit of exploring and mix it up with mining. Go and find your own asteroid belt or ring and then enjoy the rewards!

You might as well drop in no mans land then, because if you go further than 20km away, the high RES bonus goes away as well

Approaching at a shallow angle you can normally drop into the RES between 50- 200km away. I've found plenty of Painite and all metals at that distance. No pirates too!

With the yields I've been seeing in a pristine metallic ring this week, I'd say avoid the Hi-RES and just drop into the ring.
Less time dodging ships means more time actually mining which nicely offsets the bonus for hi-RES mining.
I recently left a 3 hour session with 78t Osmium, 40t Gold. 35t Palladium, 24t Platinum and 14t Painite. If it wasn't for the Abres CG then I'd ditch the Osmium and concentrate on Painite, Platinum and Palladium.

If you pick your metals and vent the crud quickly, you can maintain a reasonable rate.

That's what I've been doing. I'm just on the edge of inhabited space and I'll keep exploring until I hopefully find some pristine metallic rings. I did find pristine metallic asteroid belt and dropped onto that. But there was only about ten asteroid. I mined them and got some rare metals including a couple each of palladium and platinum. It was awkward to mine because of being tricky to know where I'd already been.
