Ships Mining ship advice

Hi!
Ok, so.. I am currently using a Type-7 for mining. Specifications:
3x 6E Cargo racks (for those who do not know, but this means I can move 192 ton cargo at once).
2A Refinery.
2x 5D Hull reinforcements.
5A Shield generator, reinforced and double braced.
5A Powerplant, armored.
5A Thrusters, reinforced, double braced. I was initially going for dirty drives and drag drives on this one.
5A Frame shift drive, shielded, mass manager. This is just temporary..
1A Collector limpet.
1A Prospector limpet.
3D sensors, long range.
Bulkheads - reactive armored.

Mining tools: Laser and abrasion blaster.
Protection: 3x 0A Shield boosters, augmented and double braced. Electronic countermeasure. Mine launcher. Beam-laser (turreted).

So issues? Always.. Yesterday I stumbled upon an asteroid with nothing else than Rhodplumsite in it. So the issue being unprepared. I needed something else, like a seismic charge launcher or sub-surface displacement missiles.. Yes, the abrasion blaster did give at least 50% of Osmium.. But that's not enough.

What ship can you recommend me for mining besides the Type-7. I'm currently in Kuk system to mine 500 ton - to meet Selene Jean.
But also to make some some cash in the long run. I do not need to mine something valuable, but it's more fun.
The math - 3 x 64 ton cargo holds = 192 tones. 192 tones x 3 = 576 tones.

So, my cash as of now is around 40 mill. If I sell this ship, add around 80 more mill, plus stored modules around 11 mill. credits.
My plan is to get a Type 9 or type 10. I could need some advice around that, and what engineering (experimental also) to be done, what hardpoints, modules etc.

Take your time, I have a lot of time and I'm in no hurry. I just need something in the end that can do the job a little bit better than my current ship.
Note: I have not locked up all engineers, but that is not a problem..

I currently use something like this:

I think I may have dropped the shield to a 5 and fitted a size 6 cargo rack.

I actually have two mining T-9s now, one for laser, one for core. Laser miner has more limpet controllers.

You've really got to like flying the T-9 though.

Thanks for the fast replies!
I have tested it once (the T-9). Sold it again. It's expensive, but sure, worth the cash. Can haul a big amount of ore, minerals etc.
The Python can defend itself against much, but not haul enough.
Good defensive capabilities in the Python however.

What's the maximum distance you can travel with your ships?

Currently prospecting in STF 1774, found a couple of mines with Rhodplumsite there. Believe me, last time I mined that - I was a target for almost every NPC when returning to Kuk..

I go scouting in a DBX.
Either order T-9 delivered to nearest station, or fit scoop and booster and fly it out (followed by swapped out modules, sometimes purchase cargo racks on arrival).

Once full, back to nearest station, outfit (smaller) fuel scoop or extra fuel tank. Depends how far it is to the best buy price station.

T-9 doesn't have good jump range, but it can do a lot of jumps on that tank.
I might stop and refuel at stations on the way.

Defense: Heatsinks, that's all I use. I tend to fight interdictions, but that gets old really fast in a T-9. On arrival at next star on route, if a pirate turns up I loiter in the corona popping heatsinks, pirate usually dives into the star. 🤷‍♀️
Never lost a load to NPCs yet.

Python is much simpler. Fight every interdiction or drop and run/jump or drop and blow them to bits.:D

The pyton he showed you also got 3x6E cargo racks - same amount as you currently can. I don't like flying it though. I've no idea how you make do on only 1 collector limpet controller.

Check out EliteMiners - Lots of advice there on builds. I initally found it as I didn't find enough information about mining on this forum (was confused why there was a forum for exploration but not mining).

Try a T10, can haul some and defend some and not the least - can mine everything.
Otherwise, Python is good, but you need to decide if you want to do core mining or laser mining since it cannot do both and still be able to defend itself

This is my build, i need to engineer her, but she works for me, i plan where i mine so jump range is not an issue

That needs upgrading, Just realised I've not got a 3a prospector limpet controller, I might add that sub surface missile so i can do all types of mining too!

Also, what do people go for when engineering their power plants and power distributors?

I hope you take a refinery too ;)

Nice catch. Not sure why it shows like that. Exported the build thru esdm. I use a 2A refinery (and a probe launcher offcourse)

Why did you choose 5A prospector limpet controller? This seems like more prospectors than I ever felt I needed at once.

It is nice to have more (than 2) I can also get 11 collectors and 2 prospectors but I prefer the other way around. c5 prospector give 4 prospectors. c5 collecftor gives 3 collectors.

Thanks again for all replies. I did find that one thing, a miner could use, need perhaps.. That one thing I cannot outfit:
Seismic Charge Launcher.
Yeah, I saw that as well.. My limpet collector. Well thing is, that normally I haul cargo from one port to another. But to meet Selene, I need to actually mine around 500.
Yes. I have now outfitted it with a 3A collector limpet controller. Was looking at the other ships.. A T-9 can give me around 512 cargo capacity and 4 collector limpets (7A).

Also both the Python and the T-9 gives me the option to use a Seismic charge launcher.
An anaconda gives me 256 tones in cargo hold.. But is a bit overkill perhaps.

Federal Corvette?! Wow.. Now that one looks good. Pricy but.. What if I change the hardpoints a bit? So I can add a Seismic charge launcher.
See - on one of the asteroids, the Rhodplumsite was "inside" it. Didn't get it right away how to get a hold of it (yes I admit it, I'm a bit of a newbie coming to mining!), so watching some videos, talking to some friends - get that and you can do stuff. I did manage to get some from another asteroids. However, prospecting it, said it was around 1.3% of Rodhplumsite.. So not enough.
So the T-10 can, if wanted, give around 430~ tones in cargo capacity.. And also defend myself. Around 100 tones less, but better defense and options to use other mining tools.

Tough one.. I have to really look into this.

Also when I start to get into Open play, I want something to defend myself. Since a player thinks in other ways than an NPC when interdicting, and can use modifications..

Thanks again everyone! But it's a bit hard to decide.. I'll try and build some ships in Coriolis and see what I can get in means of mining vs. defense.
Interdiction is one thing. When mining and pirates come - I think I need to defend my valuable cargo somehow.

I run the T-10 as a miner with 256t of cargo and full defensive capabilities. I even have my fighter swirl around the asteroids while mining to keep me company.

Last but not least, the T-10 has one of the best cockpit views which is even more important in VR.

For old school laser mining I use a T9 - even with plenty of collectors etc, I can still get 590 cargo.

For core mining I recommend a Dropship. This is Deidra. She can take a beating and give it back, and 88T of cores is 90M+

ETA: You may even get some change from selling your T7

I took my newly outfitted T10 out for its maiden mining expedition last night and it was very nice. I dropped the SLF hanger for a second C5 collector limpet controller but I think I'll reinstall it for the next trip. I was running with 3x C2d mining lasers with 10 collector limpets (2xC5 plus 2xC3b units with a 3A prospector and a 2A refinery). Its going to be a nice armored mining ship. I also mine in a Beluga and they both have great views for wandering among asteroid fields. GL HF Miners

Use a beluga. 5 medium hardpoints, so you can do all types of mining, and you can count on around 270 cargo space and have size 3 collectors. Its also agile and pretty fast, keeps a 25ly range even unengineered.
