Mining status help needed.

I am mining in Frey and just learned how to use the modules.
I was told that the refinery was full. Headed back to Frey and decided to check status panel.
Refinery was empty.    ?
Went back to the ring and kept working. Got 2 chunks and told again that the refinery was full.
Refinery has 2 items in it. 11% of something and 9% of something. Doesn't seem full to me.

One other thing, the collector drone stopped working and would not move away from the rear of the ship. Seems rather odd to me.

Anyone had problems like this, or am I doing something wrong.

Details: Cobra 3, refinery, limpets, collector and prospector, 2 mining lasers, and that is all for mining I think.

Depending on the level, a refinery can only refine so many elements at once, i.e. the number of bins it has. What likely happened is your refinery's bins were partially full of two different elements while your limpet was trying to collect a 3rd element. Since there was no space in the refinery for the 3rd element, you got the warning message. You'll need to purge one of the bins to keep refining.

Thanks for the answers. Most appreciated.

Have to ask another question because of answers though: If 2 elements are in the bin, and it is not full, do I have to decide what to dump and only continue to mine the most profitable?

Think of the refinery slots as buckets that the collector limpets fill up once it get full 100% the bucket is emptied into your hold.
now if you only have 2 buckets with stuff in and you want to collect a 3rd type of stuff then you have to chuck the contents of one
bucket overboard so you can collect the new type of stuff.
if your hold is full then you can fill the refinery buckets to 100% and when you sell your ore those will transfer to your hold was room is made avalable.

You can choose to empty one of the bins or ignore the 3rd element being refined and dump that instead. For max profit, yes I would dump the least profitable resource. If an asteroid contains 3 or more elements (I think 3 is the max), then you may be constantly emptying a bin or tossing out an element in the refinery. This is the benefit of having a larger refinery with a lot more bins.

if you have a small ship, 2A refinery with 6 bins in the class 2 slot is the most efficient, in fact you can keep mining after cargo hold is full and fill the refinery up as it acts as 6 units of cargo space. Then as you empty your cargo hold it moves them into the cargo hold.

Yaffle: That link is pretty good for now.
Duedy: I'm going to look into that. One other thing, when I meant the refinery was empty, then from what you said, there should have been something in the cargo bay. But nothing!
Could that be a glitch?

Sorry to drag out this thread.

On the Cargo tab, you have several sub tabs (or whatever they are actually called): cargo, refinery, materials and synthesis. When you are mining, you need to pay attention to both the cargo and the refinery sub tabs.
.
When you get a message that says the refinery is full, it usually just means that there are two fragments in the hopper. Sometimes it might delay your limpets, but that is all.
But if all the bins in your refinery have a percentage of ore that they are working on and a fragment with a different mineral turns up in your hopper, you will have to clear one of the bins or vent the hopper to continue mining.
It's only when all your bins are full or partly full that you really need to pay attention to the messages that the refinery is giving you.
Once a bin reaches 100%, you will get a message saying that something has been refined, it will then put one ton in your cargo hold.

I thought that was the idea from what you said before, but when I returned to the base there was nothing in the cargo hold. So maybe that was a glitch.

But you have given me a good heads up to do it right. Thanks a lot. I will keep working at it in Frey till I get it right, then go chase a better mining area.

Frey is fine, it's pristine metalic iirc. On my phone atm, so I don't have my database handy. A few posts back in my post history I posted a link to a very good tool for finding mining sites near you.

Sorry I didn't get back to you till now.

Other posters have done a good job at giving you reasons and the messages. I will add with the different class of refinery and the higher having more bins, the less bins you have the more manual management is needed. Now with 2.1 adding a few more mining commodities even the 4A with 10 bins needs a bit of management.

If you use Coriolis an online shipbuilder you can copy the URL so people can click it to see (click link below) this will allow you to build your ship(s) and see cost before you buy.
