Mining still useless for money-making

With the new 1.3 update, I hoped with all hope that the inclusion of collection limpets would help mitigate the waste of time that mining is and turn this venture from a hobby into a profession that one could make a decent amount of money from. However, with the way that the collection limpets are controlled, I fail to see how mining has been made any more profitable. Collection limpets are only good for one run at a time, and they are one-use only. At 300 credits a pop, you actually LOSE money from mining with limpets unless you are mining the rarer materials.

I have taken a long break from Elite in the hopes that mining would become a profitable profession. However, it seems that with this update I will be forced to wait even longer.

Or you just could google and find people posting videos and tutorials online how to gain some serious coin with new mining system. Also visit High activity RES - they have extra chunks for reason.

Sorry but that's tosh, I've been mining with limpets in the beta and I made a million in an hour and half the time I was browsing and irc'ing. If I worked at it I guess I could get close to clearing 1.7-2m an hour and the limpets last long enough to collect many pieces IF you use them right ;)

..... So the op is correct. By your own numbers, mining is terrible for making money.

You would have made far more money "mining" the Pirates for their bounties.

Careful. Ever since 1.3 live those HI RES places have crazy pirate spawns. I was fighting against a trio of pythons in a wing earlier with no police around (and had a blast doing so). Popo showed up for an earlier mob but decided to peace for whatever reason.

Bring an escort.

I tried it with my Anaconda. 40,000cr for the limpets, 190,000 for repairs and guess what - 300Cr. for the Bauxite I could pick up. Bad deal so far. Really got to read and view tutorials.

OP, have you not read about the collector limpets? About how they have two modes? One single-use targeted collect (for pirates mainly) and then untargeted area collect where they last the amount of time given in the outfitting screen? For A-rated, that's 720 seconds, or 12 minutes.

Have you tried not targeting fragments and just shooting them off asteroids and then launching a collector drone? Use your contact list in your left hand menu if you want to monitor what the fragments contain.

Collectors are still bugged. They fight over the same fragments and splode at the cargo hatch. You could still use a single collector which is better than looting the cans but mining is just way too slow and not enough mats in the roids themselves. I guess if you found painite and had working collectors it might be worth the effort. Still by the time you have a handful of fragments a trader has already made millions. Needs to be way faster and way more in the roids. Then maybe if the hopper was automatic and held more it might be better.

You're more than welcome to do that and if you earn 2,5,10,20x what I do, that's fine I really don't mind.
Bounty hunting is fine but I get bored in 30 mins, whereas I can mine for hours and find it enjoyable and relaxing. If it makes less money, so be it. It's no big deal imo.

Another thing to look out for is that the new resource extraction sites give higher yields in each fragment than other places - the low intensity ones have a little higher, the high intensity ones have a lot higher. The high intensity ones also have less police presence and more pirate presence.

On the other hand, if you want to find the rare stuff like Osmium and Painite, then go to a random spot on the rings, not a RES - these areas have the same yields as before 1.3, but you're more likely to find the rare stuff since it hasn't been exploited.

Metallic rings are also better than Metal-Rich, which are better than Rocky and Icy.

I made 500k in 30mins or so with a 32t asp. I didnt use prospectors and I used one limpet at a time. I would like to see twice as much in a roid though. And I would like to be able to move walst they are collecting. This is all that is needed imo.

remember this way of mining is the starter lvl of mining so creds per hour should be a bit less than trading and BH. W8 till we have mining machines! Then see how much you can make

Don't have any fragments or anything else targeted when launching the limpet
That will engage area collection mode on the limpet

I love my little collecting friends, cost me 120c each from an high tech station. Would like to know how much time is left on the limpet before it dies (awwww) is that information anywhere in ship? I've got an A3 controller.

people are forgetting risk = reward. Mining is up there with trade and exploration (exploration doesn't count but whatever.) With trading, people can camp trade route system but with mining, sit at a ring with outpost near-by is much much safer and easier.

With mining you have NPC pirates hounding you and are prevented from jumping away because of the mass lock from the planetary ring. Compared to other professions, mining is high risk low reward.

Miners should be slicing off multiple tons of gold/palladium per chunk if FDEV wants them to even approach the same league as bounty hunting and trading.
