Mining - what am I doing wrong?

Watched some vids, read some threads, thought I had a handle on it. But no.

1. So I switch to anaysis mode. And I find the fire group that I put the DSS on. I press the trigger and I go into another mode? Oh, alright then. I wonder how I get out of that? Anyway, apart from that - I guess this is where I fire probes. Only - I can't aim. I can't move the ship. I'm frozen with the current view. HuH? What?

2. The little window on the lower left where results of scans come up - this is just sitting on "scanning ..." - continuously - non-stop. Even after I fire a prospector so I can't actually see what it found. The icon goes round and round and never stops. How can I mine when I don't know what the rock has?

I guess I'm stupid - I'll accept that - but how do I find out what the problem is? Even the vids I've watched don't mention any of this. Thoughts anyone?

Maybe look in the control options and see if there is a keybind for exiting the DSS? I mean, you say you want to exit the DSS...

Did you target the prospector? Would seem an obvious thing to do...

Most people seemed to work it out <shrug>

Just don't mine it sucks, apart from the opal thing of course.

Carrot time for cmdrs to bless fdev on their next contrived gold rush....

Have you correctly set up your controls for the DSS?

Probably not - what's this "third party" business? Is there a guide for setting controls up? Toggle front/back? Why would I want to do that? Look behind me? Why?

You don't use the DSS when mining, In fact the DSS should not work at all when you are mining as your shouldn't be in supercruise...

You just need drop out of hyperspace into a ring, then switch to switch the Analysis mode HUD, You need to deploy your hardpoints also to fire prospector limpets.

The DSS is an entirely separate thing for mapping planets, and can only be used in supercruise, its only function to do with mining is firing a probe at the rings to see if contains any mining hotspots.

If your In that mode and unable to move then you probably need to set up your keybindings.

Yeah - it's finding the hotspots I was trying to do. Has to be keybindings. But the terminology is a bit confusing I find. I would have thought that you wouldn't really need a whole new set of bindings for moving just for being in that mode. Why would it be any different to moving in any other situation. Oh well.

It's "Third-Person", but I honestly don't know why FD calls it that, it's still a first person view. As you can see, you can reuse your main flight control axes to control the DSS, I'm using my stick to slew the DSS around, since you cannot fly the ship while in this mode. Oh and the front/back toggle shows you the backside of the planet you are currently surveying. You can slingshot probes around the planet to get to the backside and this view gives you a better understanding of the areas your probes have mapped.

Yeah, I had some issues at first and it took me a couple of hours to set up the key binds for the FSS and DSS....probably still needs some work.

Mining again....it took me a couple of hours to work out what I was doing, what I was looking for, how the new tools worked etc...

Finally got there and last night took home 103m cr in about 2 hrs of core mining, with a few breaks for this and that so actually about 1.5 hrs.

1. Set up all the binds for the DSS.... AND the mode switch. Nobody tells you this...there are now 2 modes; combat and analyser, there is a binding to switch between them. Set that to a key as well.
2. Equip abrasion blaster, seismic charges, prospector & collector limpets, pulse wave analyser, refinery, DSS.
3. Select analyser mode!
4. Find a ringed gas giant or ringed brown dwarf - use EDDB if you want to find specific types of ring
5. Go into DSS - fire a probe at the ring - it will reveal if there are any hotspots.
6. Fly to the ring and manually drop into the ring - preferably somewhere in the hotspot
7. Fly below the ring, just below the asteroids looking up and use the pulse wave analyser.
8. Bright yellow roids, large or medium size will have cores. Find one and fire a prospector at it - target the prospector, you can see in the bottom left panel what is in the roid - the core, if there is one, will be marked in blue text
9. You want to be looking for the new minerals, Alexandrite, Mote, Serendibite, Void opal etc... they fetch approx 250k per tonne and often much much more
10. Trial and error is the only way but after three sessions I'm getting fairly good at spotting the right roids.

The rest is up to you working out what does what and how it all works. There is some satisfaction from cracking a roid....good luck

Thanks to all. Appreciate the advice. Even the good vids don't seem to think it necessary to spend any time explaining the controls but it is really the most difficult part. After all, there are only so many keys and there is SOO much to bind these days.
