Mining

Ive tried this for like half an hour now and got bored/frustrated.

its just so fiddly, why not have some kind of module that brings the ores to your cargo scoop.

will drones do that in the 1.3 update?

i dont like the idea of slowly going from fragment to fragment, on a time limit so ur kinda hurried, for possibly low quality ore.

and when they all come out in roughly the same location u go to pick one up and knock all the others away a bit.

ridiculous

Drones will do that, but they're one use only, so it remains to see what they'll be like (Utility? Equipment? Cargo needed a la limpets?) I haven't tried mining yet, but I'm keen to give it a bash in a minexploragatoring T6. Sanity questioned.

Kind of...one use yes, but when set to "area collection" they will scoop up several fragments until the drone is full before returning that to your hold.

So best option to mine in after 1.3 is ...? T9? don't think so - is a bit harmless... Python? Yup can be... Asp? Clipper?

one use but not one item
.
Drones have two modes targeted and area

in "targeted" they collect one item and return - in "area" they collect everything they can

Also FD have said that high value sites will have many more npcs lower value sites will have less - so take a T9 to poor sites or a well armed Asp to high value

If you can collect with drones relatively efficiently (tonnes per hour) the dodgy RES could be quite fun if you rock up in say an Asp with some teeth. Farm some bounties and pick up some tasty mining -bits while you're there. I'll definitely give it a bash in the Beta as well as trying the new ships.

Does anyone mine in the game at all? Mining needs a whole lot of love which hopefully will come in 1.3.

I've been mainly mining for the past 4-5 months. I enjoy it and I find it relaxing. I'm not arguing that trading isn't more profitable but I don't care, for me mining is fun, trading is boring.

To be quite frank, I'm rather miffed that they are changing mining to please the whiners who get bored in 10 mins flat. hey I get bored of trading in 10 mins flat but I don't whine about it and beg them to change it, I just don't trade.

I hope they give turrets some love then. I can see mining being far less profitable if you spend most of your time fighting off NPC's. However, NPC wingmen would be helpful for solo players (hint, hint).

Since a drone can be used this way; the smart way to use one (depending on your ship/scoop capability), is to 'chip' out a lot of ore, then drone it.

The trick to mining is to probe each rock until you find a good one, then discharge your whole weapons capacitor into it near its axis of rotation to reduce scattering. With luck you'll get a beautiful contiguous arc of ore chunks to scoop. Then situate yourself at either end of the formation, such that the whole thing is "below" you, where your scoop is. Then grab the first chunk, and instead of turning around, reverse, target the next chunk, pitching down if you need to (like in an adder where you can't see below), and grab the next. Ratcheting your way down is far more effective than chasing ore in loops, and oddly pretty fun.

It might also be possible to line up the whole formation and hoover it up in one go, but I'm not sure you can scoop things you don't have targeted.

Used to. It's relaxing and I really enjoy making a big strike and going home with a hold full of precious metals. But, it just wasn't making enough money and I wanted to play with bigger ships. Will be trying again in 1.3

I tried mining but gave up after realising that it was just... silly (thinking polite here). It is like it hasn't even been thought through properly.

There really should be a mining module that you fit to your ship... then you land on the asteroid with grapples from the feet of the ship and you start mining and the ore gets dumped into your hold after refining. No chasey chasey catchy rocky. That is tooooooo darned inefficient. The real gameplay should be finding the good asteroids that hold the good ore.

Even Eve has mining nailed. Hell, even Kerbal Space Program has a mining system that kicks ass (admittedly it is mods). The mining in Space Engineers is really fun too. But in Elite Dangerous... the biggest danger is falling asleep when mining. It's 3301... perhaps FD need to look at other ways of mining in space.

Tried mining as well, outfitted my asp with some mining lasers and refinery... took forever to get a few tons of sellable ore and always afraid of crashing into that big spinning rock I just shot while collecting fragments so I gave up on that idea.

The drones sound intriguing, but we'll see

I agree, i started mining, and thats all i did, made alot of money and bought an asp and vulture, all spec'd up, i think its just the age we live in, instant gratification. everyone is too caught up on profit per tonne and profit per hour, im sorry but if they are that bothered about profit, how about

MINING
Profit per tonne = 100%
Profit per hour = 100%

the only limit on how much you make is how much cargo you have and time

The changes to mining are enhancements, and all seem perfectly reasonable to me. I've done some mining. It was ok, but drones simply make sense (why wouldn't we have them in 3300, when we have FSD and all sorts of other stuff?). I don't think enhancing an aspect of the game is exactly a candidate for "being changed due to whining". You don't have to use the drones. ;)

I may be off point, so will apologies in advance. Drones don't matter, it is the fact that I can not tell if that dot on the radar indicates if the roid is behind me, in front of me, above or below !!!! Why are there no altitude bars the same as for any other object? Am I missing something or do the altitude bars on appear when you are close enough to spot the roid in your own head lights (minium scan range)?! Roid identification - at least identifying which ones have been visited by yourself and their position relative to your ship really needs worked on in my opinion.... or am I just doing everything wrong?
