Mining?

Hello commanders
This has been beat to death and probably posted wrong however, I have to ask and here I am...
Not all of us who have entered the universe engage in pirating, bounty hunting, ramming ships in the mail box or run around killing othesr etc... Some like myself, are simple miners out to help with industrialization.
In the 40 years I have been visiting different worlds I have never been as frustrated or quite simply had a bad experience. This is my first. Like all commanders I aspire to big fancy new ships and the gear that goes with them.

Unfortunately, since finding myself in the universe a couple of weeks ago and heading out faithfully to the pristine metallic ring of Umatitis I fail day in and day out hour after hour to find anything more than a couple of trinkets of silver. Tonight for example I spent two ours going asteroid to asteroid in search of my fortunes to head off with about 1.3 tones of silver. At this rate it will take me upwards of half a year to get the next simple upgrade in ships.

This has become such a frustrating and unenjoyable experience for this humble miner that he contemplates moving on to new adventures. I know there are drones coming but am not convinced by the discussion threads that this is going to help much. Al I would ask for as a pure miner is that I can actually find some minerals to mine.

Am I doing something wrong? How does one go about plying his trade without entering into intense combat, as quite frankly, I am not built for it and have no combat skills. Any help would be appreciated.
In 40 years I have never posted to a forum. My frustration level has reached a crescendo forcing me to reach out.

Thanks,
Commander Magnomous.

Start looking into trading rares until you can afford either an asp or a type 7 preferably.
then start trading regular commodities.
heres a couple of links to help you out

I disagree, mined my way to an ASP/T7/Python. Been a while, but I was good with the CR's from mining. Pristine metallic is a must, but search the clusters vs. RES. 1st cluster might be terrible, but the next one, or 2 or 3 at the same location would be great. Then mine the hell out of it. Rinse and repeat.

Greetings commander,

I've spent many hours mining at metallic planetary rings (with major or pristine reserves) and could always find gold, palladium and platinum, besides the more common silver and the abundant minerals like indite, gallite and bertrandite.
I dont think i've ever mined at Umatitis, so I can only recommend you try another system (Delkar is just an example). And are you sure you're mining at a metallic belt and not at a metal rich one. That makes all the difference, you can only find gold and above at metallic rings or belts, not metal rich.
Surely mining isn't the most profitable activity in this universe, but if you enjoy it, you can always aspire to mine in an anaconda in the near future.
I haven't mined in a while, but the last time i did, it was in an ASP, and a full load of mixed precious metals was always around 1 million credits worth.

Hope this can help you get past your frustration and embark on a successfull mining career.
Best of luck

You need to find Pristine or Major reserves in order to successfully mine preferably with a station in a nearby system. You should not mine RES as you will be attacked. While mining, I've never been attacked, but then again, I find a location away from major trade routes.

Outfit your ship with a good refinery with as many bins as possible, 3 or more is the best.

Good luck, I certainly earn't quite a bit from mining, but it is very boring and ultimately I left to trade rares.

I usually like mining, but the lack of 'tractor beams'...having to go chase down every single fragment, line it up with my scoop? No thanks. I'll just go shoot things that shoot back. Sad for me, 'cause I usually enjoy some nice relaximg low-risk-low-reward mining.

Mining was the first job i was going to try before i read about it, but i never got down to do it, since i got the impression it's the least profitable way to get credits.
With the new update coming out, drones could make mining a breeze, faster pickup of the loot and less tedious work of scooping things up.
Maybe they could create a system where players refill the stashes of each system stations supplies, making it more player driven than it is now?

Concerning the profit made, it is a bit slow, but with the cluster belts I linked above I was able to do this:

finalstats.jpg

It only took a couple days play and got me a Cobra Mk III with a few nice little upgrades + insurance. And it probably wouldn't of taken so long had I not had to learn the scooping mechanic when I started. (I did 2 missions then went straight to mining when I first got the game, I played other mmos and remember mining being one of the best money makers, though atm in ED it is not lol)

I have always loved mining as well as exploring, don't get me wrong combat and trading are fun....sorta
But i earned my first cobra and T6 with mining profits which was then sunk into equipment for exploring

I much prefer prospecting roids to prospecting million bounty anaconda's and FDL's

I started as miner, when noob I was mining at metal rich common reserves. Then I found out that metallic/pristine is the place to go for some serious money... now I know it isnt because the time I spent to find platinum/palladium/gold/silver isnt worth to do it. Once I tried it to fill my 32 cargo with atleast 26 of those precious metal it took me 3 hours. In the end I made around 330K from that trip but 3 hours ? Not worth it
I switched to bounty hunting. I've spend more time on mining than bounty hunting but in the statistics I can see that I from mining I've made 1.2mil from bounty hunting 2.5mil
Mining needs some love to be worth it doing compared to trading/bounty hunting

As stated, pristine metallic is a must from my experience... and yeah, I mined a little. I once filled up a Clipper w/ 200t of rares from mining. Yep, took a while, better part of a day, but it was a nice change of pace at the time.

Mining is just flat 'terribad' in the current game, tho hopefully it will be getting some love in the near future.

No, mining is fine IF you do your research.

Only mine in Pristine Metallic belts. ..this will ensure you only get good stuff.
Blast 1 fragment off an asteroid and scan it, if it's under 40% size then ignore it and move on to the next one.

I only mine gold, platinum, palladium and only if the chunks are a good size, ideally over 60%

im going to disagree there.
not with the research and inherent mechanics but I'll disagree with the income level.
how long does it take you to make 1 million mining?

Trading: Go into the individual system map through your navigation UI and check each station in the system and see what they're importing and exporting. If you see one is exporting Gold buy gold there and try find a station that is importing gold to trade with. You'll make a profit. To make a decent route you'll ideally want to find a trade route that nets you a decent profit for each trip. Basically start off with one route that profits then branch out and skim through each commodity in the corresponding port for the return flight to make more profit. You can find a 1k per ton profit easily enough and usually within one or two systems of each station/outpost.

In combat just buy yourself a Viper and you're set. Get a decent loadout and you'll be able to bounty hunt anything up to an ASP(bar a Vulture) which is the vast majority of bounties.

Thanks to all for the replies, I see some potential light. although the planet I am mining at with a ring is listed as pristine metallic I am guessing there might be a listing error as there is nothing greater than silver in the ring. This aside, it appears my error was staying stationary hoping for a miracle :). I will try venturing forth to explore the potential in other areas with pristine metallic. I did chuckle at a couple of posts like "just pick yourself up "fill ship name in". tough to do when you make 5k in 3 hours :) Hopefully I will be on my way to riches and I really do appreciate all the input. Thanks you and fly safe.
