mining

1.3.7
ok, I have been mining for a while now. about 20hrs of game time, a few things that have been cropping up on my trips to explore and mine.
whilst in a metallic ring I tried about 10 asteroids in five different locations and found nothing. this has happened in two of the 7 times I have been in a metallic ring. also a slight frame hang as a large asteroid passes my ship, random.
in an asteroid belt I'm finding stuff to collect in rock asteroids and nothing in some metal asteroids. if it is metal then it should contain something.
I have been able to find all minerals but only a few metals, the rarity of these metals does not equate to the amount of time needed to collect.
at other times I have done over 100,000ls and not seen anyone, I drop out at a place of interest and within 15secs someone drops out behind me. then foolishly tries to take me ..) how if no contact in hyperspace

metals found = gold, silver.

mining is a dead end part of the game right now
ED put some effort into spicing up the items to find. commodities market there are too few items .

Mine in pristine metallic belts..

With High Metal I think you only get the less less valuable metals. With Metallic you get the rarer metals that are worth more, from bertrandite, osmium, silver and so on up to palladium. At pristine sites the percentages of the metals in the fragments that you mine are higher. If you can find a site with pristine metallic rings then let us know, they are very hard to find.

what ship are you using I want same cargo capacity, I can only hold 64 in my ASP. though it is setup to explore and fight/defend as well.

Here is an Asp build with lots of cargo space: http://coriolis.io/outfit/asp/04C5A...C0P4C5.Iw18WQ==.AwhMJBGbtdIo4Q==?bn=Asp Miner
Fighting and defending means running away though due to no shields :)

Here is a recent thread about what you need to do: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=164372

i have been mining on and off since the update. Pristine metallic reserves are the only way to go. Its also really beneficial to build rep in a station with a hi-tech economy near by, as these seem to be the most reliable source of mining missions, where they pay you a lump of money for a small amount of material, but you need a good relationship with the factions there to be eligible for the better pay outs.

here is a list of systems with pristine metallic reserves around inhabited space... the ones that have been documented anyway.

I've pretty much learnt mining in the last week thanks to the Abres mining CG.

Alkupai 12 has pristine metallic rings...
Don't bother with the RES. Just approach the inner ring slowly and drop out at minimum speed.

This is my Python rigged for mining...

Take a look at these fragment percentages...

And this is what I came away with after almost 3 hours..

Mining isn't comparable in income with bounty hunting RES or trading, but it is possible to pull in 1MCr/hr if you put in the effort.

Is this counting in mining missions as well in your experience? Moving between 3-4 high tech systems made my income increase with 1.5 million credits from missions alone...

Very new to mining, using 160 ton cargo python with 2 prospectors, 6 collectors and 2 med min lasers, and 9 bin refinery.

Not discouraged because still learning but spent 3.5 hours mining earlier today in pristine metallic rings - not a res site, just dropped into rings.

Grand total for all that effort was less than 300k - and only because got just enough osmium to turn in for 200k mission.

it must be more than just dropping in at pristine metallic - all i was finding was severely low grade minerals and extremely low metals (both in volume ans quality)

thought it was because i mined in rings instead of res, but ppl on this thread say rings are ok, so i guess there must be rng involved when you enter the instance, i swear every asteroid i sent prospector on was low grade lepidolite over and over.

Sounds like you actually mined from the rocky ring instead of the metallic ring

Depending on where you're mining, not all of the ring system will be metallic. If you look at the system information, it should give you some information as to whether there are multiple rings and if the good bits are closer to the planet or further away, and then it's a bit of trial and error. But I can tell you personally from mining several pristine metallic rings this past week (and like you, not dropping into the RES but away from traffic), if you're in the right spot you should be seeing indite, gallite, bertrandite, silver, gold, palladium, painite, platinum and/or osmium. Anything else and you should try to find a different spot.
