Minor factions / cross play

My friend who got me into the game is creating a minor faction for us. Unfortunately he is on Playstation.. I'm on xbox.... wondering what the best course of action is. Can I join his now since it's outside the game... do I just wait for cross play to be a go again? Can I create my own on Xbox and we combine them later type deal? What's the thoughts on this?

You can have the same goals, boost the same in-game factions, attack the same outposts to win influence, etc. You just can't fly in the same space.
Lots of in-game player factions are cross-platform. In fact all the biggest ones are. Discord and Inara is where most of the chatter takes place
