Newcomer / Intro Minor Factions, Local News, and the Economy

I bought this game about a week ago, and have been playing it obsessively ever since - so many systems to learn! I've mostly played as a trader, and thus far, I've learned that high-population Industrial, Refinery, and High Tech economies are good for trading, that Anarchy systems are often best avoided, and that minor factions experiencing Booms often have missions with good payouts. In short, I've learned just enough about the simulated economy and politics to make money, without really knowing how anything works.

I enjoy this game in part because I become immersed in it, and so I guess what I'm saying is that I'd like to learn what's really going on in these star systems I'm stopping over at. What are the local factions up to? Why is Faction A offering missions to massacre members of Faction B? Why does this system have so many superconductors, and why is there such a high demand for advanced medicines? What can I glean from the local news panel?

I've seen a lot of guides for how to make money in Elite Dangerous, but is there any advice on becoming more invested and interested in the world on a local level?

Every mission description is a piece that fits into a bigger picture of what is happening in the system, and as you progress with the reputation, higher-seated representatives of the faction will provide more details. There is also a great deal of information in local news network. You can read news about the bounty hunting and piracy going on in the system, which faction is on the rise and experiencing the boom and, perhaps, prepares to expand into another system. There are news about changes in the market. Which commodities are sought after and so on. Also just random pieces of personal stories and minor happenings going on. then there is the GalNet, where you can spend hours. If you read between the lines, you can anticipate things to come, upcoming CGs, for example, or it can lead you to a system where important (and profitable) changes and things are happening.

If you choose a faction of your liking, you can help them to raise into power, watch them battling other factions, retaking stations and resources. If it's a small system, let's say a couple thousand or tens of thousand inhabitants, even a single commander can help immensely and really make things happen.

Location, location, location its all about understanding the dynamics in the systems of interest to you. Go explore and then start investing your time and effort into a system that is the essence to a more personal buy-in or commitment.
