Mismatched terrainpaintings

Sometimes when i used the terraforming tool for an exhibit the painting tool isnt matching to the real terrain in the exhibit. For example i just made an exhibit for my chinese pangolins - under the earth. So theres terrain on the floor and above the exhibit.

Im playing on a desertmap so everything is sand-based. I finished terraintools and took a barrier around the exhibit under the earth (everything works fine!)
I had everything complete in sand in the exhibit so i painted grass and earth at first everywhere on thr floor and rock above the exhibit to makr it look like a cave. Everything is now painted in earth/rock or grass, but theres still more than 30% sand in the exhibit. I mean, its ok. Welfare drops around 10% but no problem. But it would be nice to know where this sand should be

By the way: the freedom you gave the players is just awesome. I can now build another exhibit on this exhibit under the earth:D

Maybe the sand is on the top of the cave? Like not the ceiling, but the ground above it. Since habitats seem to extend forever vertically, anything that's above or below it on another level will still count towards the habitat requirements.
