Ship Builds & Load Outs missile/torpedo build for a combat ship

To make it short I want to outfit a missile and/or torpedo focused combat ship and I need some advice.
I know this might be considered a stupid idea, but I want to give it a try anyway just for fun ;)
Has anyone got any suggestions as to what ship I should outfit and what modules I should fit in it?

I can currently afford a build for a python or cheaper ship types.

i ran 1 large bottom 2 med side gimbal pulse and 2 med bottom missiles on my Federal Dropship, very efficient set up i found.

I have 3 large gimballed pule and 2 med missiles on my python atm. Again it is mainly for energy efficiency reasons but I find them very useful for adding a good wodge of damage when timed right.

- you'll want to have shieldstripping weapons
- you'll want to have a lot of hardpoints (either medium or the double amount of small hardpoints)
- you probable want to be fast, because you want to outmanouvre pointdefence by getting close

so i'd say, an Asp is a good bet (3 small beams for shieldstripping, 1 small, two medium torpedos/missiles), a smaller ship might be a courier or a DBS (each two medium hardpoints for missiles/torpedos, combined with beams for shieldstripping) - python and/or FAS might loose this contest for their unnecessary large hardpoints.

but best bet would be a FDL - a large beam into the huge hardpoint for shieldstripping (or a huge plasma, if you can aim with it. i can't), and 4 medium hardpoints for torpedos/missiles. it is fast, it has strong shields, it has the power after the buff ...

Asp with a pair of gimballed medium beams to strip shields and 4 seeker missile racks maybe?
I ran this for a while just for fun. It's very satisfying to drop their shields then pelt off one volley of seeker missiles and watch the little ships go bye-bye. Won't have enough ammo in the small missile bays to take down larger ships though.

FDL with huge PA or large beam for shields and 4 medium seeker racks then I guess.

Assuming say 4 hardpoints I would be inclined to do my normal thing of often pairing a beam and rail on primary fire with missile secondary, then the same primary but secondary torp in another firegroup. Don't think class or horizontally symetrical with your loadouts and you can come up with some neat ones that cover a wide range of attack patterns.

For example:

Left side, Class 2 gimballed beam over class 1 fixed rail. Right side, Class 2 torp over Class 1 missle. Two fire groups, both have Rail and beam primary but the torp and missile are secondary in seperate groups.

Letting go of the primary fire to cancel rail charge when needed. You can also make a third fire group with say only rail as primary and both guided munitions for hull beating when shield down therby not wasting beam on hull when low weapon power.

That's interesting. Why do you use a gimballed beam?

I do something similar sometimes, but with a small fixed beam with medium rail together as primary. With the hardpoints being so close together on the DBS, the rail hits almost exactly where the beam does, so the beam does some damage and helps me aim the railgun more precisely(especially for long range shots or module sniping).

In this case I mentioned gimballed because I figured it would be more well recieved by more people and also because I am sure there is a mounting situation I mentioned above where the beam may not quite be close enough.

I was mainly putting the idea of the non class and symetrical mounting concepts out there rather than a specific setup. I will sometimes group the inside left weapon and outside right. I have not flown a Clipper but it would be a ship where I try that out with some combos.

Fair enough, I just thought maybe it was a clever trick I'd missed or something.

I completely agree about asymetrical load-outs. The "2 small lasers & 2 medium MC" combo is great, but I think it can be a trap for newer players, in the sense that they get stuck in the line of thinking that they always have to pick weapons according to the principles behind that combo. When you start experimenting with other weapons they don't neccesarily have to conform to that model any more, and some may be more effective in different layouts.
