Missing a huge opportunity

How come EVE Valkyrie is so tightly connected with Oculus Rift and its new version Crystal Cove?
This is a very weak, tiny, skeletal game that was basically intended as a demo.

How is it that Elite Dangerous, a real large polished game, wasn't tied in with Oculus Rift at all?

The exposure you would get would be enormous, every single video on youtube regarding the new OR model is tied to the EVE game.
Someone on your team really wasn't paying attention here, we are talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of marketing and potential revenue.

Errr...no. If you think that FD would have any leverage over OR demo done with ED other than EVE Valkyrie, you are mistaken. Those are deals struck long time ago, and nothing much can be changed about it.

Also as far as I know Valkyrie is VR only.

Frontier takes its time. They are redoubtable at marketing level, I think. They do not want to be overwhelmed by the money. When the time came, they will strike a great publicity stunt. At this time they will can devote to the absorption of hundreds of thousands of players and revenues that go with.

:)

Is EVE older than ED?

EVE is like 10 years old with very established player base. EVE Valkyrie *started* as OR demo done by EVE developers, then turned into full blown game. They have worked with OR devs hand in hand since inception. FD announced ED support only 2 months ago.

Also there's lot of work to do on ED OR support. Said that, It would be awesome that ED would be used to demo consumer version when it comes out in Q3. If ED continues to look so good as it is now (it will get lot of improvements too), there's rather big chance for that to happen.

The other factor is ED is in Alpha with only a select few having access...

I am sure Frontier will tie in with OR marketing as and when there is a much fuller product to show, no point creating too much early enthusiasm for Elite only for people to forget about it whilst it stays in development.

Better to do it in BETA with a release date for full game (assuming Frontier wish to or even can).

It really should, they added a tower defense game for this Crystal Cove version so there is really no reason why such a polished game like ED with a pedigree wouldn't be tied into it.
It's really sad, people will be watching such basic feature and show videos for years, the more ED sells when it is released the faster and better will the expansions come.

I hate to tell you this but a lot of people don't know ED exists, and I'm talking about people who regularly visit gaming websites.

Well, no hate here :) That's just reality, and I am optimist about that - that such shows how big this game can be when common crowd will get their hands on it (word of mouth, reviews, etc.).

FD will do their marketing, don't worry, just when second beta rolls out (as they have limited resources, and it makes sense).

edit: and yeah, FD looks for e-commerce manager :)

Agreed with the above.

Just to add my pennies worth ...

To all those bleating on about FD's lack of marketing, I'd just say; contrary to popular belief on EVE's past marketing, it was word of mouth that got the ball rolling on that game (from people like those on this forum following the development). All those "epic" looking EVE online (non in game) videos came later down the line as the CCP started getting the big money rolling in. If FD get the game right the word will get around and people will flock to it.

From where I'm sitting Frontier seems to be doing just fine.

There's a lot of pent up demand out there. Build it right and build it well and they will come.

From what I can tell Elite are going to be first to market and probably will have the whole world market to themselves for at least 6 months +

I just spent another hour playing the ED Alpha in my Rift, whats so great is the way they have actually spent time re-configuring the dashboard and lighting to work in that mode. Nearly all games before this have had OR support as an afterthought.

If I can figure out a reasonable way to produce a video of it I'll try to add to the Youtube videos of this game as we need to expose this stuff to the world :D

The games industry is filled with examples of what I consider, and I'm sure some would agree, is the wrong approach to marketing a computer game. It results in massive hype, and more often than not, a massive backlash when consumers experience their hopes and dreams battered by the reality of what they have actually bought in to.

Whether you work in sales or marketing – or simply starting out on a romantic relationship – honesty from beginning to end creates loyalty.

Make people feel good about you before they buy, during purchase, and after purchase and they will reward you with loyalty. But let any of these crucial elements fail and customers will come to question themselves first but then you second. And if they have been made to feel a fool, they will blame you. Rewarding you with negative feedback, complaints to friends and significant long term damage to your business.

Sums it up well enough. It's 101 marketing and consumer behaviour. Pretty much any first year marketing or consumer behaviour textbook will cover it.

If there is to be some high-profile deal done marketing OR alongside E: D, let's hope it's when it has been, tried, tested, tested some more, and given plenty time to mature (on both sides of the deal). Rushing in headlong is far too much of a risk.
