Missing asteroid belts

So I travel to a system that shows as having metal rich asteroid belts on the Galaxy map, and when I get there they don't show on my navigation screen. Some have been. I've been to a few.

Are all belts not mapped? Do I have to do something to find them, like get within a certain range myself?

Help a budding miner out.....
