Mission abandoning

Just taken a mission to kill 5 pirates, got to the right system, SC around looking for USS, got my kill count up to 3 after a good 50 minutes of fighting and cruising then the next USS was the 'abandon mission' NPC. Lost my kill count and was advised to meet him at a station after I abandoned the mission, the original mission was for about 15K CR, the 'reward' for abandoning? 1660CR.

Why can't we have a choice in missions like this where we can tell the NPC to do one, keep our kill count and carry on with the original mission?

It just seems at the moment if you're unfortunate to encounter this kind of NPC (and I have a few times) you really have no choice and have to abandon it, especially if you've spent a considerable amount of the mission time raising your kill count only to have it disappear and have to start again.

Winds me up so much I'm considering killing the NPC next time and to hell with the bounty.

Is there any way I'm missing where I can refuse the NPC offer and keep the original mission?

I just met one of these guys earlier. I met him first thing and hadn't started getting a kill count though. Anyway, I didn't want to abandon and since I was in an empty anarchy system I just blew him away. Didn't count as a mission kill. But I went to other USS's, killed my pirates and cashed the mission.

Are you sure you lose your kill count just by running into him? Can't you just ignore him and continue with what you were doing? As far as I could see you don't need to make a choice at all.

Funny I just got on the forum to ask the same question. It seems like if you have a kill count already it automatically resets the mission to the "Abandon Mission" criteria and gives no option to complete what you had started. I was hoping someone would be able to tell me if I'm missing something.

But did you try to just go on killing targets? If so what happened? While I also had "abandon mission" in the transactions tab it still counted kills also.

I'll certainly try that next time but if it's not showing your kill count anymore how do you know when you have enough? Not all 'wanted' targets are classed as pirates.

Also if you're not in an anarchy system killing the NPC would hit you with a fair fine for murder, maybe enough to make whatever you get for the mission go on fines.

You can finish the original quest as normal after you kill the required number. The extremely annoying thing is the resetting of the kill count.
Has happened a few times as you don't always meet that guy who wants you to switch sides in the first USS.
In the unsettled systems the only way to meet pirates really is to hunt USS. Get a couple of pirates in the first USS then some cargo-USS then that guy who wants you to switch sides and your kill count is back to zero.
When you can hunt at nav-beacons you can avoid that at least.

I've killed several wanted ships since, thinking that it would work. Nothing has changed (no kill count shown) but I don't know if I was killing the appropriate pirates or just miscellaneous wanted people. I haven't figured out how to tell the difference yet.

You can tell by their actions. For example when you enter a USS and they come up and scan you to find out what you're carrying then they're definitely pirates.

Killed a few more, then got the kill count up to one, so it does keep track. I wish it would show you the fact that both options are open. Some types of missions show you both alternatives once you have been offered a different path.

Thanks KodiakAlpha, still not sure if (or why) the kill count is reset though. I'll have to find out next time I get a pirate killing mission.

I also get kill count resets after being offered 'alt' missions. I think it's a bug. This is particularly frustrating since the timer runs in real time. I want to play for about an hour, get my kill count to 3-4 then bam! kill-count reset and am forced to finish the mission and play for a total of 2h or I lose rep!
