Mission board avatars

Hi,
I have recently installed ED again and I have noticed lots of great improvements!

However there is something that I am not very pleased with - no issue there, you cannot please everyone. I noticed that "avatars" that are now showing up at the mission board are imo not on par with quality of UI and the game in general, it is kind of disrupting the feel of the game. Is there some way to make them not to display?

Also, would someone who follows up the game development could recall if there is some official explanation why they didn't stick with making just a spaceship game and go with all that planetary stuff and now I hear right even avatar gameplay?

Thanks!

Not yet but 2.2 coming in October adds some improvement to them to stop them looking so 'ill'.

Lots of people want this (me included) but I can see how you might prefer the game to focus on controlling your spaceship. Frontier are adding a lot of things in 2.2 that are space specific - ship launched fighters, map and route planning improvements, new stations, new places to visit, improved star graphics - there's always going to be some stuff you aren't interested in but with every release they try to add little improvements to every aspect.

Because the Kickstarter said that's what they'd be delivering. I wouldn't have backed otherwise. I'd just stick with Oolite.

I don't think they can be switched off, but I do agree with you that they are a little underwhelming. They might have looked great in 2006, but not today. Hoping we'll see improvements on that front in future updates from FD.

Really? Really?!

Maybe if you did the bare minimum of research prior to purchasing the game and, like others said, checked what their ultimate goal was you would know that "just a spaceship game" was never the goal.

Get out.

As far as avatars are concerned. What if this is FDevs flavor? This isn't star citizen. We're not dealing with CIG, there is not some dying need for all-of-the-fidelity in this game. They look fine as they are and fit with the Elite universe as we know it because, check it out, they're some of the first avatars for this generation of the game.

Because Elite Dangerous was never supposed to be just a spaceship game.

man--- he asked a question. Chill. Seriously...

They are so lacking in quality compared to the rest of things that they stick out like a big ugly sore thumb.

They're     .

I agree the Avatars are awful renders. The faces generated in the cmdr creator previews and such looked superb, I would assume that the avatars are also created using this but they look shocking as though made 15 years ago. They are not even animated so don't have that issue to contend with when beong generated. There is no reason that they shouldn't be almost photo realistic. They disappoint me every time I log into the mission board.

Who knows, I guess V2.2 will indeed improve on the Avatars as well...

There kickstarter promised planetary stuff and FPS eventually.

They announce avatar improvements in one of the Gamescom streams.

I'm just sat here wishing my avatars would load. I can't see any faces :(

Verz, hHave you changed the user interface colours by any chance? Apparently, if you change them to certain colours the faces don't show up. This might be a "workaround" for you OP if you don't mind messing with the colours.

The models are being worked on as character creation isn't until 2.3 and they have said they were improved for 2.3, however they are supposed to look weird. Look up the avatars for Frontier: Elite 2. They had the same "zombie" look. I think its part of the lore.

Because that's what we want... well except for you :).

Planetary landings are awesome.
They really make you aware of scale in the game for example.
And it is just fun to go down to some of the cool planetary surfaces, and see some of the cool planetary bases.
Also it can be a nice distraction to do a base attack once in a while.

I feel that the addition of planetary landings only make the space in the space sim feel more spacey... if you get my drift.
It is great for contrast. I really love it.

Avatar gameplay is the next step in development that will result in being able to walk around your ship.
Many people want this.
This will make ships finally feel like actual space vessels. It will add a new dimension to the game, just like planetary landings.
