Newcomer / Intro Mission cargo help

I'm trying to work out how to get the cargo requested for missions I accept, and for the life of me I can't work it out...

My first mission wanted computer components, but I don't know where to get them lol

Second mission, wanted some sort of food, and I managed to find a market in a different system so I bought some there and handed them in.

Third mission, wanted some other item.. But again, no idea where to find the stuff?

If it tells me where to get it, then I am blind :D

Do I need to just fly around to markets and buy the stuff, or is it an item somewhere in space I need to fly to? ( I cant seem to see any new locations )

Please help :D thanks x

Yes, it can be something of a challenge to get the goods for the mission type you're describing. In some cases there will actually not be a neighboring system with a market that supplies them, or a market that should supply them is all out - thus why the mission generated! You will indeed want to travel to some other location, buy the goods, and bring them back to where you obtained the mission.

Gradually during play you will develop an understanding of what types of goods are available from what types of stations. I won't try to provide an exhaustive list here, as that will be long; the link posted above by Sloppy Pilot is a good start. You will recognize that there are five economy types (which can mix/combine) for any station market: Extraction, Refinery, Industrial, High-Tech, and Agricultural. Each of these demands and produces a particular profile of goods. Stations within the same system may have different types of markets, and a given station may combine two (or more?) types!

Information about what economy type a station has can be seen when selecting the station in the System View, from the Galaxy Map. With some practice and familiarization, you will soon be able to determine where nearby you ought to visit to pick up something needed for a mission, and indeed this mission type is among the most lucrative peaceful missions I have seen regularly.

This isn't guaranteed to work because the commodities markets are a bit all over the place at the moment, but open the market page and look for the item. Hover the mouse pointer over it and check the info screen on the right - - it may have an "Imported from" entry with a few system names that you could try first.

There is also another reason for checking the market screen before accepting a "go fetch" mission. Very occasionally in Gamma (not sure if it has been fixed in release) the commodity you are being asked to get is actually available for sale in the same station! Most often this is with Food Cartridges at Industrial stations but I have seen it with other goods as well. Really easy money if this happens :D

I spent the first couple of hours in ED just flying to all the stations I could get to... and taking photos of the commodities page on my phone.

Then, when taking missions to supply cargo, I just flipped through the photos, and could see what was where. The prices are pretty stable for a couple of days, but will change over time, so you need to regularly update your stash of photos.

Make sure you get the station name, top left of the screen, in shot :)

Or better still buy the trade data on the galaxy map for systems nearby with an economy type that generates the intended commodity. High population systems generally have much larger stocks. you can use the population slider filter on the galaxy map to single out high population worlds and then select only the ones that are of the appropriate commodity type. Trade data is applicable for 24 hours, so it's accurate for a day, meaning at the time of checking you know there's active trading of that commodity from that system.

Combining this with higher population system filtering, trade line filtering and after an initial buy up round of trade data of near by systems, you can find the location of any commodity within a couple of seconds without having to resort to meta game tactics.

The only real hurdle is learning which economy types produce which commodity types. But luckily for you, I made this spreadsheet for exactly that purpose.

I found this video useful in understanding how the Galaxy map could help me find things for missions like that.
While trading is a bit broken it still works for identifying systems that sell stuff, ideal for those 'get me X of this' missions.
