In the Empire that is.

I'm allied with Empire main faction and every time I go to a new system I find I'm allied with all the minor factions that are Empire aligned.

This is kind of a problem because I'm trying to trigger my Summerland access and next Imperial Rank progression (currently Master)

Yokai's guide to rank progression suggests moving around to new systems once you've made the current system friendly to you. But as I mention above when I go to a new system, even if I've not encountered the local faction before they seem to have inherited my rep from Empire main faction.

I must be missing something - does anyone know what it is?

This happened to me as well before I became an Earl, basically I think you are so well liked by the Empire that you are Allied with all of them everywhere! Keep plugging away at the small missions for all Imperial factions and you should eventually get the rank up message.

Thank you Philip, from reading the guide it seemed as if I should be neutral with local factions. I'm glad nothing is broken, your reply has been reassuring. I've not actually been doing missions - just picking systems with ringed planets and then hunting pirates.. It's been incredibly lucrative and fun and seems to have the same beneficial rep effect. Lots of Python's, Dropships and Anacondas have been coming in (presumably since I hit my current combat rank ).

It was good advice to spread the love around , however. Your rating as displayed is a combination of local rep plus major faction rep. So even when it says allied, as long as the local rep isn't allied, then it is still worth doing the missions. There is no way to tell, you have to use your judgement. Do a dozen or 2 missions for a faction, then move on.

Also interesting Dommarraa, so my rep with the locals may not be as high as it looks. I'll keep doing what I'm doing, visiting distant stars, meeting new people and blowing their ships up.

You should see your "real" rep with a local faction on the mission completion screen - the rep for a loca faction you see in the right-hand panel is a combination of local faction+overall faction rep, as Dommaraa says.
