Newcomer / Intro Mission difficulties

So im REALLY new at this game and im having problems with making money. im trying to do the missions from the stations but I am having problems finding well quite frankly anything.
the only ones I seem to be able to complete are the missions that have commodity delivery, I would like to be able to do the retrieve data ones as they are fairly quick cash but I have no idea how to locate the "data drops" that it asks for is there some method of scanning im not doing? or needing a different piece of equipment?

Yes - You go to the system they tell you to and stay in supercruise. Set your thottle to zero so you stay at 30 km/s then wait until unidentified signal sources pop up. Vist them until you find the data drops or whatever they ask for, then scoop them up.

The tricky bit is delivering the cargo. It is normally considered illegal, so you will either have to take missions from outposts, or know how to dock at the station without getting scanned by security. Lots of threads recently about this.
