Mission failed - but why?

Just wondered if anybody can tell me why a mission failed. It was a standard kill the pirate - additional mission. I only took it half an hour ago and had 24 hours to do it but I suddenly got a message saying I had failed the mission and I have no idea why. It's not a big deal but I'm curious. Am I missing something obvious with these rather standard missions?

Without seeing the actual mission description it's hard to say. Do you know if there was any sort of target ETA listed?

In my experience the '24 hours' to complete kill missions is a complete lie, and there's an actual, much shorter time limit somewhere else in the description...

If you have to Surface scan or met an informant in space first theres a time limit on how long these first section in the stage can take...

Mm - thanks. Of course I can't post the description because since it failed the detail is now all gone. It wasn't a "find the contact" one either or a surface scan - just a kill the pirate mission. Never mind. I guess there is no way of ever finding out now. I just thought it might be a known wrinkle that had escaped me. But wouldn't it be useful if the failure message actually told you what had failed exactly.

Did you accept it off a mission board, or from your inbox (i.e from a message)? The timer ticks down on them before you accept them... so if you accept it at the last minute, it can be a problem.

Also, when/where did the mission fail? Were you in supercruise or normal space? If the target is destroyed by NPCs without you doing enough damage to them, it fails the mission. So, it's possible a situation like this happened:
  • Target followed you out of supercruise near a station (Pirate Lords do that)
  • Target got scanned by cops near the station, attacked and destroyed the target, without you noticing. (i.e you were docking at the station, or something)

I've had this happen once and it was that the target got killed without me doing enough damage to the hull. Ordinary kill the pirate missions had the short time limit taken off in the last update so it's just the 24 hour timer to worry about now.

Yep - I think you nailed it. Had a whole bunch of pirates to despatch in the same system. Dropped into one location and 2 others joined in. While I was scrapping with the first guy the other two went at it and then moved off my radar. A few minutes later I got the message. I think one of the other guys got taken out and that failed me my mission. Makes sense now that I see the sequence of events. So I've changed my tactics now. I'll wait to see how the new guys engage before deciding on who to shoot. If they all come after me then I'll decide whether I can take them or not. If they start scrapping then I'll wait a bit and see who is losing and then join in. Working so far.

I know these missions used to have a thing where you'd be told "Your target will be at [place] until [time]" and if you didn't go find the pirate withn an hour or so you'd get a warning telling you the mission would fail and then, a few minutes later, you'd get a mission fail.

I thought that'd been changed recently, though, so the time-limit no longer applied?

They have cargo, which is why they attack each other.

Oh I see. Of course - makes sense. Not being a pirate myself I've never used a cargo scanner so I didn't think of that. Thanks.
