Newcomer / Intro Mission failed ?

I accepted an Empire Navy Rank progression mission (I'm at the third rank I think). It was to hunt and kill some random general wandering in a nearby system.
I found him but he escaped into another system (Clipper vs Cobra) and as I didn't have a FSD wake Scanner to follow him, I don't know where he went.

Is it possible to find him again (and complete the mission) or should I abort it ? (and loose some reputation in the process)

Yep just keep searching new USS for him and you shall find him again If you were given more than 1 system to search for him try jumping to one of the other systems and check out some USS...
