Mission Failed...

As with most users, I am (mission failed) anxiously waiting for the (mission failed) release of the new (mission failed) version. Although I'm (mission failed) not at all excited about (mission failed) the ability to customize (mission failed) the appearance of my (mission failed) commander, there are (mission failed) much more important (mission failed) things to sort (mission failed) out. I didn't see (mission failed) anything in (mission failed) the patch notes, but I'm (mission failed) hoping these issues will be (mission failed) resolved. I think you (mission failed) know what I'm (mission failed) talking about!

(Had this happen over-and over again last night, for some very attractive and lucrative missions, and I just ended up rage-quitting the game in disgust!)

It's a bug. When you get your first mission insta-fail, go to your left hand screen (Transactions) and clear it. If you leave it there, you're all but guaranteed to get more. Some people are saying to log out and back in again, but I haven't found that to be necessary. Your mileage may vary.

Hi there,

That's an interesting idea, but I don't think that actually interacts with the bug in any meaningful way (though I actually had to think about it for a few minutes, as opposed to most of the theories people have put forward).

I believe I have found what was causing it (and have since written a potential fix).

Logging out and back in often works, primarily because the issue is on the server, not the client, so anything which can get you connected to a new server can help.

Thanks,
Dom

I had a mission fail once. It was a while ago and I lost my ship and everything. Of course I blame FD (well after T.J.), because if they had made the Cobra IV just a little bit faster, I would have covered the required 3kms in under 10 seconds. Then that scan would have never been completed and the criminal mastermind I was carrying, would never had been discovered.

Thanks for the insight, Dom. +1 rep. It's good to hear that you're on it. :)

Well, that has T.J. written all over it. ;)

This is actually pretty helpful. So basically:

If I mode-switch and see the same missions, it means that I have connected back to the old server.
Whereas if I see a new batch of missions, it means that I have been connected to another server and therefore should be safe from more insta-fails.

Cool.

EDIT: Oh and obligatory:

I know exactly how frustrating it is...but just for making me choke on my tea, a virtual touch of the forelock [haha]

Hi Dom,

Good to see you're getting to the root cause of this. Since it is a server-only fix, any chance it will be released as a hotfix (i.e. before 2.3 goes live)?

If not, I'll just blame TJ...

Hi there,

There is a chance, but I don't have anything to announce right now.

Thanks,

I've had soooooo many of these. I've tried to track when they occur and if there is any way to reliably cure them. I have tried accepting other missions before the golden nugget ones, I have tried clearing them, I have tried NOT clearing them, nothing! Logging in/out (or changing modes does seem to have some effect but it is also not a perfect cure. I've also considered that the mission slot might have gotten "poisoned" so I've tried filling it with something less valuable first. The only perfect solution is to walk away from the game and do something else in RL....

Last night a nice tasty 3 mil local delivery mission (Boom - mission failed), so I cleared the mission and dumped the cargo on the pad. Took another nice looking mission 2 mil (Boom - same thing). So I tried accepting a Data Delivery Mission (that one got accepted just fine). Took another 1.5 mil mission (Boom!) . At that point I was done and got up and walked away...

It seems to happen mostly in very popular systems/stations and perhaps during very popular play times. I'm a computer guy and my gut tells me this might be some sort of a communications issue with the server(s). I.E. Server not being able to journal the mission because of high instance workload... Just a guess...

Who gives a crap if we can make our own look-alike avatars if the game is unplayable because of bugs? (In fact, who cares about avatars anyway? What a waste of time and it doesn't improve the gameplay!)

There is also a well know refinery bug that causes large refineries (i.e. 4A 10 bin) to simply lock up if you have 4-6 limpets running.... Had to give up on mining as well as I got tired of logging out every time the refinery locked up just to spawn back in and then have the obligatory pirate come by to say hello...

There are a lot of well known bugs in this game. The devs ought to be fixing them FIRST before I get to select how many pimples I have on my avatars face....

Hi there,

if it is what I think it is (and it seems really likely that it is, because it fits the behaviour perfectly), then it is not a communications issue.

However, there is a connection between the likelihood of it cropping up and the popularity of the system/market.

The short story is there was a bug in how the missions system was handling dynamic updates of mission templates from the webserver.

These occur roughly once an hour per server and had a chance of affecting previously populated mission banks.

Thanks,
Dom
