Newcomer / Intro mission failure warning for new pilots

Be very careful when accepting missions.

I accepted a mission to deliver 3 Tea. Turned out I could not jump that far so I could not complete the mission (I should have checked first)
Whilst at a another station in the same system I thought I'd better cancel that mission.
As expected I got charged (fined) the 1400 credits for the cargo. So then I tried to sell the cargo at the station but could not sell it on the commodities market.
I thought, don't tell me I have to take it back to the original station... so I went back.
As I'm entering the station where I got the tea mission, I get scanned by the authorities. Bamm ..... 3500 credit fine for carrying illegal goods.
Since when did tea become illegal LOL
So turns out I can sell the tea on the black market. I sold the tea for 1400. So in the end I was only 3500 out of pocket.
Still an expensive lesson on your first day.
Not sure if this is how the developers intended it to work though. Seems weird that tea is classified as stolen goods even though I paid the fine for loss of the goods.

I think the fine is for failing the mission (penalty clause in the contract), it's not the same as you compensating them for the tea.

Also just in case you didn't know you can jettison stolen cargo in the station and avoid any further legal troubles. Of course trying to take it to another station that has a black market might be a bit more interesting.

Be careful picking up things in space too. I picked up something that I found just floating at one of those unscanned sites, and then got fined for having stolen something. Ugh... I thought I was just cleaning up the system!:)

Pretty sure the 1400 fine was the fine for failing the mission which I thought was designed to cover the cost of the goods. But even though you pay the fine, it seems the good become stolen.

Yes the goods become stolen once you abandon or fail a mission. So if your not careful there is a triple threat for failing/abandoning missions.
1) Fine for failing (usually the cost of the goods on the black market, so you can break even)
2) Goods are stolen now so you will get another fine if you are caught with them
3) Losing rep with the giving and receiving faction for the quest. This makes it harder to get missions from those factions, and to get better missions as your reputation builds with them.

This makes no sense whatsoever. What kind of fantasy economy are the Frontier folks smoking?

If you buy something, no matter what the purpose (spec or for a mission) you own it legally. Breaking a contract is only that, if there is a penalty clause, then you pay the penalty. But the legally purchased commodities are still legally owned.

I need to stop buying software designed by and for socialists.

Actually it kind of does.

When you accept a delivery mission, you are given materials to deliver. If you abort the delivery, you still have the materials so are a thief.

If you check your cargo, it will show the stuff listed as 'stolen' in the description. Cargo may be checked from the right info panel - top tabs: Status - Modules - Fire Groups - Cargo - Functions

Click across to cargo, look at what you are carrying and see what its status is. You can take valuable drops for delivery and steal them vs delivering.

Note: To avoid problems with this, do *NOT* abort a mission unless docked with a market. *THEN* abort the mission, go to the black market and sell the stolen goods. Otherwise you will get nailed as a thief.

EDIT: Oh and you have a shipping manifest as a legal shipping document in the real world. If you are shipping things that are not on that manifest, that is often not OK with the authorities. It all depends on the situation and what "contracts" you may be dealing with. A voided contract with goods still being held is theft.
