Mission Impossible?

So I take a mission to assassinate a terrorist leader, says go this system, this base and interface with the comms array for target's location. So I get there and the base is some unlandable imperial base with navy cutters and clippers patrolling and an exclusion zone. I'm guessing I would have got blown away by the base and the ships if I had continued?

Base defenses seem tied to your rank. My experience in going to med sec (regardless of +, ++, +++ size) had me facing 4 to 5 ships of air cover on top of the usual base defenses. Another guy that is Deadly said he never sees air cover when he raids med sec bases. I know that's only two data points, but it was consistent.

I now make sure the base is not med/high sec before taking missions like that. If I don't know the sec level, I don't take it.

I suggested adding the sec level to the sys map when you look at a base, but right now, the only way to tell is to be in the system.

This sounds like a job for the srv, land outside the exclusion zone, deploy srv, instantly dismiss ship, not knowing the layout I cannot help much further, what I do is look for a clear path to the comm array before heading in, scan, them get the fluck out of there, I drive for about 1-2km before recalling the ship.

... or you sit outside the station, and listen/read what the patrol says. they make shifts/break etc. silent runnit help against them, too. make a plan, how to approach, and take the SRV.
