Mission: Population cull. Target type: traders

Ok, so I signed up for this mission, it told that the population of TRADERS must be culled in two different systems. Target count was 2. So I set out, picked some innocent Hauler with status "clean" and finished it. And was awarded with fine for killing and innocent pilot. I did not manage to get to the other system (federals persecuted me, interdicted and eradicated), but I am not sure what I was actually expected to do. Was it really finding un-wanted non-government vehicle and killing it?

An assassination mission. Those will not be system friendly. Often, the mission text will say something along the lines of "we will not be responsible for any illegal acts this mission requires you to do."

There was always a loophole in the past with the "kill 3 civilians" missions: pirates are civilians too. In fact, since they're often carrying cargo, they may meet that missions criteria as well.

The whole description of the mission is so convoluted and misleading. So traders are the ships that have any cargo?Or trader mean, target trader ships like Hauler or Lakon? What exactly the game count for trader because there is no way i would know unless they put ''trader'' in the scan info. I've tried to do that mission basically targeting Haulers and Lakons or whatever was the name of the bigger trade ships.Only Lakons counted for some reason.

So we need Cargo scaner if we dont want wasting our time and shooting at everything that we might think is a trader or...what?

Guessing what counts as a target towards the mission and what doesn't isn't fun. For my own part, I took that same trader mission once. Blasted 5-6 non-pirate lakons and haulers without getting a single kill credit towards the mission before I gave up. Fortunately I was really after their cargo anyways, so failing the mission didn't really cost me anything.

You could try killing wanted haulers or Type6s. That used to work for the kill civilians missions. I've not found any of these missions in Gamma so haven't been able to test them.
.
Did the mission recognise your kill btw?

You did the right thing OP. It's just that there can be some harsh penalties if you can't find a place to pay off the bounty before someone catches you. It's a tough galaxy out there! You just encountered the faction system at work is all.

Sure, but if i know what the game count as traders.Trader ships, anyone with cargo, or just Lakon ships? So, whats a trader npc in Elite?

Well maybe you need you to cargo scan them? Or maybe go to USS and find the Trader type of named vehicles?
I dunno but for me figuring it out is a huge part of the fun and difficulty of Elite...

No, after killing that hauler there was no feedback whatsoever, whether that was accepted as one of the two required kills. So, it felt kind of discouraging, ie, do I really do it correctly. I was not in mood to go about the galaxy killing random strangers and accruing fines, so I kind of bailed. But the feds got me, anyway. Their Viper interdicted me out of my path and finished pretty quickly. With the insurance of expensive ship, my credits got back to 1000. So, that's my story, that mission tempted me and then led to perdition :)
