Mission System in Standard Beta?

"Starting in Beta 1, we will add similar online systems for our missions, which allows you to begin to blaze your own trail in the galaxy yet also have an influence on the overall galaxy-wide environment for all players."

That was in the newsletter today. Does that mean the mission system is in? Haven't seen that explicitly confirmed. But that seems to confirm it... but it still leaves a doubt what exactly it means.

I wouldn't expect a full functional mission system.
Maybe some minor form like disabling the "chose faction" thing in "federal distress" like scenarios. You might have to accept some mission at a starport first.
Then some "milkrun" missions for the Traders.
Some "kill the pirate" missions for Bountyhunters.

Small things...

This is one of the things that I am most curious about in the game and that I wanted to see implemented soon. A lot of what we will be doing will center around missions and I think it will be a major chunk of functionality.

I was a little worried that it was less of a priority for them, as it is not in yet, but since first iteration looks to be coming now, I'm really curious about what we'll see. :)

Probably should not expect more than a superficial layer at first.

I agree that it will most likely be superficial. Probably just a way to hook us in with points of interest in space. Missions NPCs will most likely be static and not dynamic as they're planned for the back ground simulation.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I'm hoping for a robust mission system, at least by the 1.0 release. Faction missions & ranking (ala Frontier Elite 2) are some of what I'm looking forward to the most.

I'm happy that we'll be seeing the beginnings of this in beta.

Sounds to me that we may see at least the rudiments of the background simulation, generating not only missions but system events. Especially since this was said in the context of the ban on Progenator Cells and the development of a black market. I hope I'm not being too optimistic.

This suggests the beginnings of the background simulation too, so I expect dynamic scenarios in beta 1 :D

Edit: Ninja'd :)

If the background simulation is to start in SB1, I wonder if they'll resolve the current conflicts in Enanin and Dahan for the start (taking into account player actions in PB1 and 2) or leave them hanging over as an ongoing system event?

If it is the beginning of the simulation and missions from that I would expect it to be a fresh start. They'll need to test a fresh start and with 50 or so systems in the image floating around seems like a good chance for that.

Now I wouldn't get our hopes up yet. Since there are other things to test like fuel and communications.

David during QA said that those events will come and gone. You will have to seek them out yourself, they wont be permanent, similar to trading. Everything will change all the time, no place will be safe for farming money.

Yes for the released game I believe. I don't believe his QA answers were referring to Standard Beta coming at the end of the month.

I'm happy enough that there'll be no permanent farming grounds and that we'll need to seek out missions or wait on system events. That will take us closer to the final game. However, it would be a nice touch if player actions in PB1 and 2 actually had an influence of the starting status of those systems in SB1. It could create some interest in current PB testers to try and influence the outcome, although I expect the Federation has probably already lost.

I don't think those "faction hits" were tracked/saved in PB.
With the wipe, it would be erased anyway ;)

I imagine missions will be similar to older elites plus whatever else they dreamed up.

Transporting items, documents and passengers to certain planets. Possibly being attacked on the way if that thing you are transporting has been desired by somebody else.

A mission to intercept somebody transporting items, documents and passengers.

Imagine being offered a contract to transport some unpopular senator to Freeport before a certain time, while another few players had been offered a contract to kill the guy. You have to get from A to B without them getting you first. But luckily someone, maybe yourself, hired somebody to escort you.

Missions to gather intel on certain planets or people or space anomaly something.

Maybe the people paying the contract dont want any attention drawing to themselves or anybody finding out you are doing this for them so doing it undeteced might be part of the deal.

Killing a certain pirate/Bounty hunter/Trader/High profile target/whatever.

Hunting down a ship with limited knowledge of its location before it escapes into deep space.

Distress signals. A hired gun to fight in wars. Finding stuff.

Escort missions, defending a spacestation from attack. Destroying a spacestation, structure.

Missions from one faction against another. This would build your reputation with one faction but could damage your rep with another.

Some missions may require you to break the law and have entire police forces on your back. Upsetting certain factions could make all them hostile and attack on sight. Some missions may cause you to get a huge bounty on your head and have the entire Elite dangerous forums on your back.

Missions will range from basic, Get to A to B. To Damn right suicidal assassinating a heavily guarded police chief.

Missions will be offered based on skill, reputation, and your popularly or trustworthiness of the persons offering the mission.

Nobody is going to offer you any sort of mission that requires a bit of skill or responsibility if nobody even knows who you are and you barely made it out of the dock door on your first outing into space.

Missions could be offered at spacestations, or possibly on the fly. Missions could start out simple but end up dynamically changing and become somethingyou regret saying you would do.

Maybe somebody offers you 100cr to safely transport some nobody passenger to Ibootis. Seems simple enough. But somebody interdicts you and asks you to take him to Aulin instead for 10,000cr. He wants him dead though and its an ambush. Or offers you money to eject him into space or turn off life support. This annoys the guy who offered you 100cr and hes paid somebody 100,000cr to kill you.

Decisions, Options, Morally, immorally. Choices you make could have an impact on what happens next.

I imagine Frontiers imagination is better than mine so stick whatever else you can think of in this list to boot too.

One thing is for certain, Its gonna be fun that is for sure.
