Newcomer / Intro Mission to Interact with Hub Access Terminal - Any advice?

Good evening Commanders,

I'm currently trying to interact with a Hub Access Terminal in the hope that it will earn me some astro cash....but i'm not having much luck. I have selected it as a target and it says in nice red writing "mission target" or something like that, but I can't get anything to scan. I drove up to it in my moon buggy and didn't have much better luck there either. I even managed to get the handbrake stuck on for a while. The locals have been trying to help me out by firing their pretty laser beams at me in some kind of warped show of solidarity, but all that did was elevate me to a status of "wanted". ....it's nice to feel wanted sometimes.

Can anyone help me?

Many thanks,

Commandeer Crumb

Scan the data point with your data link scanner - you might have to assign it to a fire button also you can use the turret view to target the data point if you are in your buggy.

...hmmm yes I tried that. Even with the ships nose pretty much touching the thing it said out of range. I lost my SRV in a...ahhmm...accident, and can't seem to source a new one locally. I might try it again tomorrow. Thanks for the tips!

Which ship? Some of them are longer than the scanner range under these circumstances?
What I'm usually missing is that I have to deploy hardpoints for the scanner to be available.

Much easier to do in your ship:
Analysis Mode
Correct Fire Group
Target the Hub (MISSION TARGET)
Bump into It
HUD Targeting Widget should flash when you get in range
Scan

(Sounds like you did all that, or at least thought you did)

I'm in a Python. I had the hardpoints deployed and the scanner assigned to the primary.

I'm not sure what Analysis mode is...

Mission Target was highlighted, though it did say the thing I was targeting was inactive.

Whats the HUD Targeting Widget?

...last one, am I correct to think the scan happens automatically when targeted and in range?

Thanks for all the help!

Yes, the Anaconda for instance. I haven't tried recently though. Could be the data links scanner's range was increased in the meantime.

The HUD has two modes: Combat mode (orange) and Analysis mode (blue). You have to bind a button/key to switch between the two. Some modules work only in Combat mode some only in Analysis mode (don;t know which off the top of my head but you'll find out quickly). The SRV has the same two modes.

No you have press the fire button you assigned to the data link scanner.

Ok, I'm pretty sure I tried holding the trigger down but I'm going to check out Analysis mode and try all this again.

...smoke me a kipper, etc...

Great news Commanders, mission success! I think it was a combination of getting my nose right in there, and also pointing at the right thing. It helped that it was pitch black this time so my controls showed up a little clearer. When I actually scanned it, it completed in a matter of seconds.

Changing to Analysis mode was not necessary but good to know it exists now. Thanks again for everyones help!

As a side question, they are offering multiple missions to the same place/same task, which is close and the money is good. Does anyone know if it's possible to complete multiple missions in "one hit"?

Completing stacked missions in one go was a big moneymaker long ago but they nerfed that for most mission types. Maybe it still works for scan missions. I'd say try it. Worst case you have to scan the target multiple times (maybe a jump to supercruise and back is needed in that case).

Hmmmm...I tried a few things but couldn't get them to stack, even with jumping out of the system. Plus, I've got myself in to a pickle with the locals and can't seem to clear my good name. I've landed at the only station in the system that will let me land (without an armed welcoming committee) paid a fine of some sort, but still have wanted status at the other bases (the ones I need to get to to make big dolla). If I can crack this nut then I will have made 40mil this evening which is huge for me.

I thought I could pay wanted status off....but I can't get near anywhere to do it now. Do I have any options here?

Ah yes... that's the downside of the planetary outpost scan missions :p . Those outposts belong to one or another minor faction, and they become somewhat angry at you for trespassing and computer sabotage. Those mission givers aren't paying you a million bucks for ringing the doorbell and running off.
At 40 MCr., you probably have made some people very angry at you. Next time you take those missions, better also check who they are against, and only accept them if you can live with these people wanting to kill you. Alternatively, if you're not going for reputation, you can also play them against each other.

I had to give up last night after finding myself in debtors jail (another new feature for me) and still having bounties...! I will take a look for an Interstellar Faction today. As for reputation, it's something I still haven't really paid any attention to yet. I probably will do at some point. My problem with Elite is getting too easily distracted by bright shiny things.
