Missions in Multiplayer

I was just wondering (the mind goes off in uncharted territory eagerly waiting for Friday to come ):

If there will be simple missions in multi-player, much like the "Clean up of toxic waste" scenario in the Alpha, and with a potential of (currently) 50,000 players, isn't it conceivable that 100 or 1,000 plays show up for the same mission at the same time?

Or are they given to players at different times to stagger them?

Or will there be 50,000+ missions so the chance of anybody picking the same mission at the same time will be infinitely small?

Or are the missions switched to more "detached from multi-player" universe for such scenarios?

Anyway... three more days...

I would imagine it would have to be sandboxed or something. So if there is a multi-player mission, someone would have to start it and invite/select players to join in the mission with you.

Players may then be assigned to ally or adversary roles, depending on the degree of co-operation required for the mission.

Well as this will be the first time we've seen the net code in action any answers to your question would be pure speculation at this stage.

So here's some: :D

It'll be a simple sandboxed zone, and as people connect they'll be placed in any existing open instance with available spaces, up to the 32-player limit. Once that limit is hit they'll be placed in a new instance and left to their own devices until someone else "spawns in".

A massive free-for-all slugfest ensues.

I actually suspect we'll get something a little more engaging than this.

There will be lots of missions going on at the same time, and limited slots per mission. For example, five players might be tasked with escorting a dignitary to a space station, while five more players might be asked to stop them.

I would imagine that such missions would create as many instances as necessary:).

Take a look HERE for some of the mission types dreamed up by the DDF :)

Stop it! , I was almost reaching for my wallet there...

Are missions instanced? Or you can be minding your own business and see other players clash against each other because of a mission?

I suppose either

a) Every instance of the mission will spawn a different instance of the respective area, thus avoiding the issue of "20 guys show up to collect the same 5 items". Or

b) Once someone accepts the mission, no one else will be presented with it or be able to accept it if they already have it on their screen, in the latter case they would get a message like "you were too slow, someone else already took the job". Or

c) Mission will be generated for each player individually, i.e. a mission will only ever be presented to a single player (though of course other people can join and help them complete it).

Instancing would go totally against the grain for ED. So you would see other players doing other missions. It would be nice if missions would set players deliberately against each other, but I think it would be difficult to time it. Maybe there will be special PVP missions that start as soon as two different parties accept the mission.

Well you could do that by simply having player A accepts mission at which point a bounty is placed on head of said player for those who accept the counter to that mission (multiple people able to accept), first person to bag player A.

Player A then has a race against time.
If player A succeeds then the bounty is cleared and anyone who accepted the mission to kill player A has failed and therefore can no longer attack player without normal consequences.

hehe.. sounds fun.. cat and mouse chase... would create some tension on player A's side, which makes it exciting not knowing when you get ambushed :D
