Missions, long-term goals?

So I've been playing this game for about 2 weeks and it's really cool and I'm enjoying it and it's been fun to chase after bigger and better ships and I bought a few. First ship I bought was an Asp Explorer which I used to do trade runs and I have an nitch in that now and I'm making a lot of money which allowed me to go ahead and buy a Python and equip it to the hilts. And I can't fly it for s@#* even though I got all of the best of year on it....So that's going to be a learning experience but that's a different question....

So I have a trade niche the missions are very repetitive but I figured out a cycle to make lots of money very quickly and I can easily get to the best ship in the game with in about a week maybe less if I put my mind and time to it.

My question is why am I doing this is there a long-term goal here is there a rainbow at the end of this grind, are there people to play with online on this game, people to share your failures and successes with ask questions to, I'm not sure what I'm doing here, this game is cool and I'm spending a lot of time on it but I now at this brick wall.

Is there long-term goals that I'm not aware of that are part of this game? Is there anybody to play with and share this with?

I mean I'm a big astronomy fan and this is really cool stuff and just an amazing feat for a AAA game, unquestionably.

Do the missions get better as you level up in the ranks where do I go to find them, is there some secret rank I need to obtain?

I mean I like the stars as much as the next guy and checking out the planets that are relatively repetitive as well what's everybody doing here, give me some tips on what you're doing in this game what keeps you here what goals are you pursuing here.

Thanks for your time please advise...

Mission types and payouts depend on the system state (war, boom, etc) and your reputation with the providing faction. Travelling around will expose you to different types of missions, however ultimately there are only a certain number of mission types available.

Part of the problem with Elite is that there is so much to do, but no defined story or path. But thats also part of its beauty - choose your own path!

There are so many options, just traverse these forums and it will give you a good idea of the scope available. Exploration, squadrons, ship engineering, mining, politics (BGS), racing, planetary navigation, passenger missions, bounty hunting, piracy, smuggling, PvP, PvE, photography, anti-xeno warfare, search and rescue, CQC, fleet building, community goals, interstallar initiatives, station repairs, solving mysteries.... And every variation of each of those topics.

Folks have been playing this game for 5 years blazing their own trails. Look around and you'll find something you like, then do something else after a while.

Example: I recently finished a community-organised exploration expedition with some 100 other Cmdr's, saw some amazing sites and travelled to places I otherwise wouldn't have. I returned to the Bubble to help out some critical station repairs with Operation Ida, and most recently been helping my Faction out in a war to win control of a new system after engineering my combat Vulture (which is now awesome!). That's only in the last 2 months.

I don't have any particular long term goals. I'm just trying to use the game as a help tool for my imagination and not do everything optimally.
Farming cash, materials, or anything is killing this game for people, while you can just try to enjoy the little moments and have lot's of fun, while not hurrying anywhere. You'll get there eventually.

I really enjoy following adventures of Cmdrs who make diary entries, or create videos of them doing all kinds of seemingly regular in-game stuff, but make up stories to accompany that, which turns it into great (often hilarious) adventures. Look around forums and you should find some.
I try to play the game in similiar fashion. In a word: Roleplaying.

My first contact with other player in game was after following entries of Jonas Treesong, who circumnavigated Ariel, moon of Uranus, in SRV. His almost daily reports were exciting read, like a diary of explorer who had to find a way through unknown lands. I got so excited that I eventually flew to meet him, helped him a little finding path through difficult terrain. Being small part of his adventure was also great adventure for me.
Later I participated in Great Planetary Circumnavigation of Kumay in Chi Herculis with many other Cmdrs, under guaidance of Alec Turner (probably one of the biggest SRV driving fans here) where we were driving around this moon for weeks, mapping it, naming landmarks, learning to flyve.
Those were one of the best moments in the game for me and they had nothing to do with earning credits or ranks.

Oh man I feel sorry for you. It took me a lot longer than two weeks before I noticed that there was no long-term goals or "end of the rainbow" to the game, so I was at least able to enjoy the treadmill for a while longer. I'm sorry to inform that you will be doing the same things you've always done but with bigger more expensive ships for as long as you choose to play this game. That's it. No the missions don't change. Sorry. There's the sheer mechanical joy of piloting and navigating, and the spectacle of the graphics, but beyond that it's all numbers going up and nothing else.

You have to find your own long term goals to have fun in this game.

For some it's amassing billions, for others it's "gitting gud", others want a fleet of maximised ships.
Others want to repair the damaged starports, some want to kill new players, some just want to pew,
others want to be left alone. Other goals are stated in this thread too.

My current Goal for example is killing a Basilisk Interceptor solo.
If I managed that? No idea, perhaps getting back into PvP, or going up to a Medusa...

It's all up to you.

There's no real 'end game' in this. Yes you can buy all the ships and upgrade them to their limits, get the ranks, collect all the materials or just aim to collect more and more money, but there's no end to that. I find that the game really rewards curiosity. Checking out all the little details, discovering the unusual or alien from the hints you come across. Try out everything and don't be afraid to waste time or lose money/things doing it; you can always get more.

I suspect that you'd enjoy joining a player group to give you a more social experience and collective goals.
Take a look in https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forums/elite-dangerous-groups-squadrons-factions/ and pick a likely looking group. You don't need to stick with them forever, once you see how that works out and get an idea of what's out there to do you can always move on to a more suitable group if necessary.

The goal is essentially "Elite" in all three disciplines. Exploration is probably the easiest - just fit up a decent long range ship and go out to Beagle Point via the galactic rim. Trade next though actually deep core mining and selling the high value minerals is actually a quicker way of making the money than hauling good or passengers. Combat probably the hardest.

Then there's the Federal and Imperial ranks which are also necessary to unlock the juicier ships.

Unlike (say) Wing Commander or the X games there's no real over arching story to guide your progress in ED, it's essentially a very big sandbox.

Missions improve when you rank up, when you get a better standing with the faction and depending on the current state of the faction

But one week trading to afford an eagle mk II, the best ship in game, seems excessive, they are not that expensive, a few millions at most with modules. ;)

First of all - welcome CMDR among the stars.

So I have a trade niche the missions are very repetitive but I figured out a cycle to make lots of money very quickly

All missions are repetitive if you consider doing just one type of them. Key to success is to find what you really like and stick to it or create a combo of missions types to shuffle between to avoid burning out and/or boredom.

and I can easily get to the best ship in the game with in about a week maybe less if I put my mind and time to it.

Word of advise - there is no such thing as "best ship in the game". Or, maybe from different angle - which ship you refer to?

Every ship is capable of doing anything, some are better in certain roles than others and since there are multiple roles, there are also best fitted for said role. Ergo - we have multiple "best ships" out there.

Do not fall into that trap where "bigger, more expensive is better". It may perform better than smaller/other ship but is it actually better? T-9 can haul more cargo than Python, true, but you won't be also tougher vs pirates in T-9 than in said Python. You may find some encounters easier countered in Python than in T-9.

And Anaconda is overrated :p and broken. OPly broken, DEVs messed with hull mass (scandalously low) hence it's the best explorer. Since mass affectgs multiple specs of a ship, low Anaconda's mass makes it OP in many fields. But it's not the best ship out there, many people will tell you that.

You may have the best ship for the role. Which one is it - it depends on the role and your personal taste.

My question is why am I doing this is there a long-term goal here

As vaugely as may it sound - whatever you set it for yourself. Ed is a SANDBOX. You get the sand, some tools and... rest is up to you. You may take few archetype roles like combat pilot, trader (buy low, sell high), explorer, errand boy (mission runner, cargo included), bus driver (passenger missions), etc...

You may set yourself more ambitious goal like reach the farthest star in every corner of the Galaxy (if you find one in a spiral, that is :) ), build the fastest ship out there, become Thagroid bane or the filthy richest CMDR alive.

Your imagination is the limit.

is there a rainbow at the end of this grind,

It is - the one you set.

As an example - myself - I set several goals. Get to center of the Galaxy (having 5m and Adder it was Great Goal), visit Colonia, get Big 3 (Anaconda, Corvette and Cutter), own multiple ships, have Billion in free credits, unlock Engineers and Guardian stuff... Most of the things I already managed to achieve, other still await their time.

are there people to play with online on this game, people to share your failures and successes with ask questions to,

First - open mode. With all of its glory and pitfalls.
Second - wing with friends
Third - squadron. Join one, make friends, fly together.

I'm not sure what I'm doing here, this game is cool and I'm spending a lot of time on it but I now at this brick wall.

Normal first entry experience. Got my ship, earned few credits. WTH am I supposed to do. YOu can be overwhelmed quickly by the myriad of choices of what to do next. My advice - take it slowly, one step at the time.

Is there long-term goals that I'm not aware of that are part of this game?

  • earning credits to afford better, bigger ships and modules. Finally it turns out that hull valaue is about 10% of what you need to fully and best outfit your ship. Imperial Cutter can eat over a Billion of credits while costing mere 200M for the hull alone.
  • unlocking Engineers, this gives you access to further modifications that enhance performance greatly
  • grind-gathering engineering materials, needed for above
  • unlocking Guardian tech
  • grinding ranks with Federal and Imperial navy to unlock access to several star systems (Sol included) and, most important, ships. Pinnacle being Federal Corvette and Imperial Cutter
  • and ofc - doing bit of everything to progress your own Trade, Exploration and Combat ranks to Elite.

Is there anybody to play with and share this with?

Play game, try chatting with people you encounter, join squadron. You'll find them.

Do the missions get better as you level up in the ranks where do I go to find them,

That's the "dangerous" part of Elite. You need to find/create it for yourself. Key is faction reputation. If you keep doing missions for certain faction they will like you more. The more they like you, the higher standing. The higher standing, the more and better missions you get. Trade missions score toward your Trade rank, the higher your rank, the better missions you get.

I, for example, chose free roaming cargo delivery CMDR. Pick something at port A, deliver to B, pickc at B, deliver to C and so on. I have visited half the stations in the Bubble, almost everyone is neutral or mere friendly toward me so whenever I re-visit them they don't offer much. Jack of all trades, master of none.

is there some secret rank I need to obtain?

Shh... keep your voice down. It's not common knowledge but listen closely as I won't repeat.
I heard that Imperial navy is recruiting pilots to do some of their work. Not a military career per say, more like affiliate but with some bonuses. Do them good and they may grant you access to some ships.
Rumors say that Federals also have similar program but...shh... heard that?

Someone's coming. Quick, get out of here. You don't know me, I'll deny we ever met. Now get lost....

I mean I like the stars as much as the next guy and checking out the planets that are relatively repetitive as well what's everybody doing here, give me some tips on what you're doing in this game what keeps you here what goals are you pursuing here.

Varies from CMDR to CMDR, here's what I've been up to:
  • starting in Sidewinder my ship goals were: Adder - DBX - ASP - <maybe something in between> - Anaconda
  • having 1B credits
  • own Big 3: Anaconda (credit lock), Cutter (navy rank and credit lock), Corvette (ditto)
  • visit Sagittarius A*
  • visit Colonia
  • unlock Engineers
  • reach G5 FSD engineering
  • obtain Guardian FSD booster
  • own vast fleet of ships, something for the every role I want to perform
  • reach King with Imperium
  • reach Admiral with Federation
  • find unexplored system
  • find unexplored systeem with Earth-like world
  • ...

Thanks for your time please advise...

You're welcome.

Welcome aboard Commander o7

I can only repeat what others have said before: There is no "endgame" in Elite. You set your goals for yourself, which can be a curse and a blessing, depending on what sort of gamer you are.

From my own experience, it helps to move your goal posts every now and then, to keep things interesting. For example, relatively early on I decided that I wanted to own an Anaconda. I even bought the Anaconda Bubblehead when I was still flying a Keelback. I put it in all of my later ships as a reminder of my goal and to keep me motivated. When I eventually got there and bought my very own Anaconda, it was a very proud (gaming ;) ) moment for me. I still consider my Anaconda the "flagship" of my fleet, although by now I usually spend more time in my other ships.I recently achieved my latest goal (owning all three of the "big three" ships, Anaconda, Cutter and Corvette). My next goal is to solo kill a Thargoid Interceptor to "earn" the unlockable Thargoid Bubblehead. So currently I'm researching appropriate ship outfits, watching youtube videos about Thargoid combat, unlocking a few missing engineers etc to prepare myself for this task. As a long term goal I've set my sights on one of the Fleet Carrier that are going to be released later this year.

I highly recommend you to look into other activities as well, just to avoid burn out. Exploration can be fun too or mining. Getting your first "First discovered by..." tag on a planet is a nice feeling, too. It becomes even better if it's a Water World or an Earth-like world.

Long story short, in Elite there is no storyline to finish or endboss to defeat. Set your own goals and look into everything Elite has to offer. This variety in activities really is the charm of the game and what keeps be playing/returning to it.

Some players go search for Raxxla at end game. Others gather information together in huge attempts to map the entire galaxy or parts of it in the hunt for secret hidden treasures and anomalies. Solving mysteries, searching for ship wrecks. Exploring planet surfaces upside down in orbit ( this is great meditation watching the surface structures go past, hope it will be part of exploration in the future and not just probes and SRV's. ).

Some players reset their cmdr and play it all over from 0, trying to make it different this time or change sides. Some use a second account just for exploration, it is the same simulated universe but two separate accounts and thus two very different simulated cmdr lives.

I would suggest you write down your options here. What gives you the most fun and/or immersion. Playing with a friend or a group is often more fun than playing alone. Post this written note on Frontier Developments Forum when done, they will appreciate short but well condensed and well analyzed feedback and suggestions.

To make your own immersion, you can land on a planet and pretend that you are entering another game on its surface, then go play such a game (i.e. Battlefield), then come back to Elite and fly away to the next adventure. Like role playing. Preferably with friends. In your head, it is all one connected experience. Write a short story about it on the forums ( always appreciated! ).

Reading about astronomy, planets, astro-geology, sci-fi ideas and books, help spur your imagination and you can go explore similar places in Elite and then go suggest features and environments that you would have expected but did not find at such locations. (like huge caves on low gravity moons, billion old mud fossils of xenoforms, or special forms of ring world asteroids that you know would form some special crystalline structures.)

The experience and the possibilities are all in your head and among friends, not just on screen.

Transport missions as a pretty safe way to earn cash, will give you at best 6-9 million per 1-jump job, to haul some 120-180 tons of goods from point A to point B.
To get the most from this (repetitive) gameplay, you need to
  • be allied with as many factions as possible on a station, to have a wide variety of offers from all of them
  • have medium ship which can hold min. 180 tons, like Python
  • be able to evade computer pirate interdictions, so you don't need weapons at all

From my experience, my home Tuan station went from Boom, War etc. states and there was always at least one 6-9 mil job, so trade missions are not affected by it. Maybe the cargo is different, but that's not important.

Where you go after this is up to you :)
