Engineers Missions now handed out spontaneously in the field?

Is this new to 2.1? I was happily mining and suddenly the flight computer goes all 'New mission critical message!' and I'm like "Wut?"

So I check out the comms panel to see this: http://i.imgur.com/VU3Vys0.jpg

I did decline the quest as I'm busy mining, but nevertheless was a bit surprised. What triggered this, or is it completely random?

That's interesting. So far I've seen quite a few "mission critical messages" which changed or extended the mission objective(still a bit buggy, but fun), though I haven't come across a mission appearing out of nowhere.

One time the mission NPC mentioned a rumor in the rewards screen, which was followed by a message telling me to find survivors of a crashed ship. Too bad the message(and mission) disappeared before I could get there.

We were promised missions arriving direct through comms, but I never saw one throughout beta, except those which updated existing missions. Sounds good !

I had this exact same mission come across. Different system though and I need to collect 4 for about 285k. Been circling system for a bit only found one so far.

Yes , this is new. During Beta I was flying around in supercruise when one of the local factions in civil war asked me to take out a turret on a planetary base.

huh.. I just got one for a delivery mission, promising me a bonus if I delivered it in 0:00:00, followed immediately by another message telling that "no one is getting their Christmas bonus" for failing to meet the new timeframe. So yeah, thanks for that :p
