Missions to Vague?

I've been playing ED since Premium Beta and have always struggled with the find x and kill them.

But even "kill x number of pirates" are impossible hard to find.

If I have some experience with ED and struggle with this what will new players make of ED missions - impossible?

Can anybody shed light on finding pirates and other NPC's we're supposed to kill...please?

Agreed. The kill missions need to be a lot clearer in instructing the player on what ships, exactly, need to be destroyed.

X - Pirates are classed as NPC who scan you and ask you to drop cargo.

Found this out last night.

I think the missions are fine, dont want to be flooded, its what makes the target a target.

e.g. = what are Prisoners, thats the one thats got me so far.

The pirates killing missions are easy ones. I have done already a couple of them without any issues.
Just go to the system specified in the mission and hang around Nav beacon. Find a wanted ship and destroy it. Repeat until you receive the "Objective complete" message. You can also check your current progress from the Transactions tab.
If there are no pirates currently in the Nav - search around it in SC you will find some USS and some of the pirates are inside these.

If your looking for prisoners on the map on the navigation page you can change the the system colors to show prison systems. I think it's government type, not sure. I haven't been to one but that would be my guess.

And that's the answer I was looking for! So basically any wanted ship is a "Pirate". I know how to find them, I just didn't know the pirates could be any wanted ship. Great, thanks a lot! Be making me some wonga when I get home from work tonight!

I just took a mission to kill 3 pirates. Destroyed 5 wanted ships. One of them counts toward the target, 4 others don't.
It is not a simple as some posters in this thread are suggesting?

Not every wanted ship is a pirate, unfortunately.

The way to tell the difference is to see how they behave. Pirates will scan you and demand your goods, or leave disappointed if you are empty. They like to hang around beacons and asteroid fields where they can intercept traders and miners and steal the goods. Sometimes a signal source will take you to a pirate attack in progress, and you can intervene and stop it.

Traders usually just fly in a straight line in a cargo ship of some sort, and get attacked a lot. Smugglers are traders that are wanted.

I never had that issue. Killing a wanted ship which does not count on my "kill x pirates" mission.
But maybe you are right and i was just lucky to find them quickly.

Aaand when i say shoot the wanted ships, i don't mean to attack trader class ships. I can't imagine a pirate in a trader ship, however it is a possibility. :)

So I got round to a pirate hunt, I didn't find squadrons of pirates in most cases, I found wanted NPC's in Unidentified Signal Sources (usually one), Nav Beacon and scouted a couple of asteroid belts. In the Asteroid belt I found a Dangerous pirate, wasn't easy but I didn't take any damage to my hull and got 15,000 credits for that single kill!
