Missles Missles Missles

Outside of the pretty visuals of impact are they any good? Have an Aspx and now running 2m gimbaled beams and 4s gimbaled multi's (very effective). Looking to take 1 or 2 multi's off and replace with missile pods. Good idea? If so which missiles?

Missiles just got buffed, so they're actually usable in some manner now. They are geared towards damaging external modules, so if you want to target enemy weapons and the like to take them out while doing hull damage, go for it.

Luckily the new update is less one-size-fits-all than before; it used to be a pulse and MC setup was the only "efficient" way.

You'll take out bigger targets faster with sub targeting the PP etc. faster with the MCs though. Only other thing I'd say...two beams not great on an Asp. Either get a couple of pulses or put it at one beam and use the other C2 slot for an MC, in which you'll easily gain back the damage from the C1 MCs you swap for missiles, but over an extended fight the beam will do similar damage because its DPS is based long term on capacitor drain.

Seekers are a good counter to small ships as long as they don't have PD. They pack just a bit more damage than a large fixed cannon into a small or medium hardpoint, at the expense of being extremely ammo-starved. Getting hit by that pretty much wrecks small ships once their shields are down (and small ships have puny shields that can easily be dropped by a gimbal or turret laser), and seekers rarely miss. Main drawback is the smallest ammo pool in the game, though you can offset that if you happen to have a large stockpile of iron, nickel, carbon, and sulfur. Great for swatting Eagles, as you'll usually only use one or two missiles per kill (the laser you used to pop the shield can easily finish them off from there), but the tiny ammo reserves make them inadequate for large targets or extended fights.

Dumbfire missiles are essentially fixed cannons, and you use them pretty much the same way. Like seekers, they do the same damage regardless of slot size, so you can fit the damage of a large cannon into a small or medium slot. Dumbfires have more ammo than seekers but less than cannons, and have a slightly slower projectile velocity (IIRC it's something like 750 m/s while a large cannon is around 800). And of course, neither missile type has anywhere near the ammo endurance of a multicannon.

A big drawback that applies to both types of missiles is that they have very low internal module damage, and a low chance of actually inflicting that damage. So while they fit a lot of damage into a small/medium slot, they're not good for sniping powerplants. For seekers this doesn't matter much since you'll be using them to swat targets that pop long before any of their modules do anyway, but it's definitely something to keep in mind if substituting dumbfire missiles for cannons: if you make a habit of sniping powerplants, missiles will hurt your ability to do that.

If you just want to break hull and don't mind the ammo problems though, dumbfire missiles do allow a very high alpha strike when they hit because they essentially let you put large weapons in your small/medium hardpoints, while putting lasers in the large hardpoints.

I put a C2 seeker rack on my FAS. It been pretty great for engaging fast targets that do long boom and zoom runs.

They take out drives in 1-3 good hits. I've found that I'm getting good hit ratios when firing as directly behind as I can. Long range gives PD more time to aquire so the closer, the better. If you can catch them on a pass they are great.

One drives are out, it's game over. I got one CMDR who attacked me and left them to float away until there thruster reboot with a lesson about trying to play pre 2.1 in this new world.

I'm working on rep the missile engineer now.

Give them a try!

Thanks to all for your input. Very useful information. +rep Cmdr's. My advice to all Cmdr's if you are grinding trying to make that multi billion credit or get all the engineer stuff, STOP IT, and enjoy this great game. It is like driving from New York to California some go the Interstate to get there as fast as they can, others drive the highways. Who do you think sees more and does more on the way. ED,like life, is a journey not a destination. Be safe out there.

Yes.
Ive just recently gone back to a Cobra 3 and started playing the game for laughs again rather than reaching for that next ship.

Replaced my MC with seekers too which is working well with my hit and run mode of operation at the minute.

I have noticed that when under attack by missiles by NPC's some of my external modules (weapons, utilities) have gone to 0% durability which has never happened in the past.
