Mixed species IRL zoos inspiration

A favorite of mine has to be the mixed savanna at the Borås Djurpark in Sweden, and it’s one of the main reasons I want Guinea fowl in game so bad. Aside from those wonderful little birds, it also houses African bush elephants, African buffalo, plains zebra, giant eland, ostrich, bontebok, and giraffes. As far as I know there has never been any incident, aside from some possible (I say possible because I could be very well be remembering wrong, I heard this years ago) aggression from one of the elephants towards a southern white rhino back when the latter was kept on the savanna decades ago.

Whoa, that’s where that video came from? Neat!

I recently visited Oudehands Dierenpark in Rhenen (NL). They have some typical mixed habitats but also a few that caught my attention:

Wolfes with Brown Bears - in a quite spacious forest type enclosure. Three bears were rescues from a Bulgarian bear farm which was closed in the 90s, and they weer doing pretty well. The wolves were just chilling nearby, no issues.

Meerkats in Gorillas enclosure, maybe just temporary? There was no information about it but both species seemed unbothered by each others presence.

Red River Hogs with African Bush Elephants - I think there is even a photo of this enclosure in this thread. Still, quite unusual mix, isn't it?

A more typical Red Panda with Reeves Muntjac - the only thing that surprised me was how exposed those (shy) animals were. I think they should have more hiding places. Muntjacs seemed quite stressed to me. They live just next to the Giant Panda house so it's usually quite crowded area of the zoo.

Another example is from a different zoo, Burgers Zoo in Arnhem. They have a mixed habitat for Collared Peccary and Prairie Dogs. They seemed quite happy, maybe the peccary in the game should also have an interspecies bonus with the prairie dogs?

I love the mixed exhibits in Vienna, Austria at the Schönbrunn Tiergarten, which try to have a natural exhibit with some interesting combinations.

And another recent new exhibit there, which can also be found at Chester Zoo and Antwerpen Zoo:

Sadly we have neither of these 4 animals in Planet Zoo, but I hope that we will get them at one point, because I would love to recreate these exhibits, but if I could only pick one of these to come to PZ, then I would prefer the andean bear and coati.

Capron Zoo has a habitat with Geoffrey’s Marmosets, Nine-banded Armadillos, and Two-toed Sloths
Franklin Park Zoo has Nyala and Red River Hog
Southwick has Scimitar Oryx, Zebra, and Blue Wildebeest
Roger Williams has Prehensile-tailed Porcupine and Red-rumped Agouti

We got the andean bear, so if only there is hope for another DLC in the future with the coati, i will be glad

My local zoo, the highland wildlife park has 2 mixed species habitats, both located on the vehicle tour.
  • The main reserve, the largest habitat in the zoo features european bison, red deer, and przewalski horse. It is uncommon however to witness all 3 species anywhere near each other. The habitat is quite large so each species forms their own group and travels around the reserve daily. Often the przewalkski horse use the travelling cars as a form of enrichment, blocking traffic and rubbing against them.

  • A smaller area, the entrance reserve features bactrian camel and domestic yak
