It was with some excitement and interest that I discovered there was an official App for Elite
angerous.
What a great opportunity for trading and planning the game as I play it! Awesome!
Aaaaaaaand….. what a let down it turned out to be. L
Let’s ignore the fact that half the time when I load it, the game appears not to have been able to catch up with where I left my ship, showing the wrong stations entirely.
No, that’s just a bug. I can overlook that. Bugs happen.
What is most disappointing is that one of the prime possibilities for usage of this app has been completely missed!
Why can’t I look up other stations to see trading data / commodities, etc? This would be so perfect! What better way to increase the immersion than to have this running on your iPad while you’re in-game, to plot out your next trade route, or exploration destinations etc?
As for looking up other systems for trading, then obviously you should still have to pay the fee (if you don’t have the data available). But really, whats the use of the App currently? I can see what is in the station I am currently at? I can already do that in game? Accessing this data while I am not in game is pretty much useless to me (unless there suddenly happens to be a boom in the local system marketplace – which is rare and I’m not going to be sitting there with this App open at work just for that).
It’s not like I can control any aspect of the game from the app. I can’t even see my ship or anything.
Sorry – this isn’t supposed to sound like such a rant, honest! I guess I am really stoked by the idea of the app and it’s incredible potential as a tool to use while playing – getting realtime market data while you are on a 40Ly trek.
This would be so amazing. The system you’re heading to has just received a large shipment of Gold, (which you are transporting) driving the price down. But you wouldn’t know this in your ship. Fortunately, your Elite Smart-Trader App (ESTA *patent pending*) has flagged this up and directed you to a nearby system which has seen their Gold supply deplete suddenly and are deperate for a shipment quick!
Sound good? Heck, I’d even pay for an app like that, tbh… ;-)
