Dammit, how am I going to justify this to she who has greater priority over my wallet than I do? :p

I am going to get so many mid life crisis jokes over this...

If OP is in a tech company of some type, surely you could just download ED to a PC.
If not your work one, aren't there any unused ones you could hijack?... Subject to management approval 😁

That would be very cool. I would suggest that the flying a spaceship part is not part of the game but that it is from a different perspective which focuses on a commander who travels to different star ports trading items and other commander focused story lines. The credits made could be linked to the main game so it becomes a compliment to the actual game itself.

There would have to be a risk element, loss of cargo and ships. That sort of thing. Might work.
Or even alotting tasks other cmdrs could perform.

Elite version of walking around is AR mobile game were you walk around your city collecting biowaste, dealing drugs, killing opposing politicians and randomly smacking other people with baseball pat at corner store. Would be hit, kids would love it.

How about a mobile AR headset that lets you select landed and/or hovering variations of every type of ship in Elite Dangerous, so that you can actually walk around the exterior of a ship while also watching them fly across the sky above? Provided you have a large enough outdoor area to use it, of course.

I read some sci-fi in the past where the computer system used the actual environment and augmented it by adding textures and clothes on people, so you could go into a dump, but it looked like a fancy 5 star restaurant. Don't remember what book it was though.

To be honest, the modern smartphone should have enough hardware to run this game. Especially considering that they managed to squeeze it into Raspberry Pi at some point as a prototype. The real question will be how you control it. Elite controls on PC are so bad that you have to spend a couple of hours figuring them out and mapping. I don't know how they did it on consoles, but you basically would have to have a controller attached or something like that.
