Modding Mining Lasers...

We have now had the engineers around for a while. However, unless I missed it, we still have no means of engineering a mining laser. I'm specifically talking about lightweight mods here. We can lightweight most other items, why not a mining laser? This would be exceedingly helpful to explorers who want to carry a mining laser in case they get stuck somewhere and need jumponium from ring mining.

Surely if the other laser weapons can be lightweight modded, the mining lasers should be as well! [yesnod]
 
Agreed. We need modifications for mining lasers. Every beam laser mod could be applied to mining lasers, too. Long range, overcharged, sturdy; give me a choice!
 
I didn't even realise this was a thing. I recently converted my cargo T9 into a mining rig and one of the things I was considering was modifying the lasers for efficiency. As it turns out, improving the power plant and distributor was a more immediately effective way of achieving a better duty cycle on the lasers. I still had efficiency mods on the to-do list though. Glad I read this here before I wasted my time schlepping the T9 over to an engineer.

What about mining lances? Are they classed as mining lasers or military hardware for modding purposes? I don't have any yet but it is one of my long-term goals when I eventually get back into Power Play.

As far as I'm aware, any mining laser or Lance can't be modded like regular lasers can be...

No mod's for the Mining Lance. [sad]

Also, why are C1 and C2 mining lasers both the same weight?
 
I would really like overcharged mining lasers for my mining Vulture.
And efficient for all my other mining ships, since mining lasers take silly amounts of distributor power and generate far too much heat.

But since mining lasers aren't weapons, they should have mods that relate more to mining than the vanilla combat mods.
 
Maybe an expert-mining-system for ice-mining could increase fragment-extraction in icy rings while it decreases performance in all other ring types.

Extraction-fine-tuning mod that increases fragment-extraction rate in every mining-situation but also increases power draw.

Short range power mining: exactly this, has short range but increases fragment-extraction rate.

so much room for improvement...

This basically. Efficient mining laser - would fit fine. Long range - hit those rocks from further away. Overcharged - generate fragments faster.
 
give them some science special effects to choose from... make them cool;

possible Special effects:

- relatively week reverb cascade
- good heat Gen on shielded ships
- sensor scramble?
- Thrust drag/slowing effect on ships
- direct shield booster damage/overload
- hull repair on friendly ships (while friendly had shields down,maybe limited to 50%? no needed mats?)
- Drain enemy distributor if shields down.
- Fuel mining... ice to hydrogen mining


primary Mods:

-Efficient
-Lightweight
-Revers charge - targeting enemy ship drains their shield and add to yours.
-Efficiency degradation - targeted ship uses more distributor draw for actions.
x-long range (maybe not have this is we get the special effect, could be to OPwr)


could be the first step to a science ship.. a ship that can use unconventional tactics... still waiting for Hacking players ships in game >< taking boosters off line and stuff, but this could be a start :)
 
I'd love an overcharged mod. My T10 build only has room for a single medium mining laser, so it would be nice to be able to squeeze a little more out of it even at the cost of significantly lower energy efficiency.
