Modifed cargo contract - no cargo.

I'm very new and this was my very first mission so it's entirely probable I did something wrong.

I got a cargo pick up contract. After I eventually successfully managed to navigate to the correct system and fly to the USS(look at me using abbreviations already)

at the USS was a n NPC ship and the contract changed and he asked me to drop the cargo at a different destination should i find it before him.

At least that's what the contract said after I attacked and destroyed him. I had neglected to read the contract change before attacking.

The problem is that after he blew up there was no cargo to find. I had to abandon the contract. What did I do wrong. Should I not have blown him up or would the cargo be somewhere else?

I'll not mention the fact I ran out of fuel anyway so even if i did get the cargo i couldn't return it. However I know what the problem would have been in that case, me being a stupid n00b.

LOL N00b!

But seriously, I think some of these missions were you get an alternative offer might by bugged. I know the assassinations ones are but not sure about these find cargo missions. I haven’t heard any problems with them.
Maybe destroying the guy with the counter offer is what did it. Can I ask what specifically you have to get. Is it ‘rebel transmissions’ or something?
Either way, my advice is if it seems broken, abandon the mission and move on, you’ll make up the cash and rep loss faster that way.

You need to buy the cargo for the original mission and deliver it to the station you picked up the mission from. The alternative mission just wants you to deliver it to somewhere else.

This is why I was asking what cargo he is meant to collect. If it’s just get 6 tons of grain or something, you just need to buy the cargo from another station and ship it back. If it’s one of those ‘rebel transmissions’ or ‘military plans’ it’s a USS job.

You usually find cargo to pick up at weak or unidentifiable signal sources (yep I hate abbreviations ) so after getting the alternative mission goal you still need to get your cargo, in this case by picking it up at the correct place which could just be by purchasing it or if it is like this case at a signal source just remember that not all signal sources will have the correct cargo type or amount so you may need to go to others after which you have a choice of delivering to the original contractor or get a better deal with the altered contract but by doing this your reputation will get a hit which you may or may not care about.

By killing the ship that gave you your new contract, you will make yourself unfriendly towards that faction and may mean you have a bounty or be fined for such an unprovoked action.
