Engineers Modifications for combat/merchant builds

Hello,

I am currently unlocking as many engineers as possible and would like some advice on the engineers and their specific modifications to focus on for combat/merchant modifications.

Is there a list of modifications that are considered 'must have' for combat/merchant builds?

Generally Jump range boost is always nice, so are thrusters and powerplant. All three can be done at least to some extent in Deciat at Felicity Farseer's

Weapons for combat (There you have to choose the engineer depending on what weapons you are using) and shields with boosters.

Though I have to admit that I am not as methodical about this. I do missions and scouting planets and when I find out that my cargo hold is full of materials and commodities, I check INARA which mods I am able to do with the stuff I collected and then go around the bubble and do them. If you focus on one thing too hard, it can get a bit frustrating, in case you're unlucky. :)
 
At the moment, I'd say the must haves are (in order):
1) fsd. Makes the entire upgrade process a lot less time consuming. You'll be moving around a lot, so you'll definitely feel the difference.
2) shields and shield boosters. The difference between factory and modified is simply to gigantic to not partake.
3) Thrusters, usually dirty drives. Unless you're mostly exploring, you will definitively feel and appreciate a noticeable boost in the flight model.

After that, it's up to you. There are a lot of cool things you can do with weapons, but I also like to have a bit of hull integrity under my shield.
 
It's also ship dependent to a degree as some like the Vulture have limited power so efficient weapons and shields can help, for traders like the T6 fitting modded mine launchers can be a real life saver.
 
I am not sure if you want to be at same time warrior and merchant, but if you choose the combat path, Selene Jean has pretty cool upgrades for armour and hull reinforcements modules. She is in Kuk system and requires 500 mined ore and 10 Painite after being introduced to her from Tod "The Blaster" McQuinn.

You can find most materials prospecting her own planet and the required commodity for max upgrades are easy to find. Hardest to find is Core Dynamics Composites for me.

Even without the combat path, you can still take an armor upgrade. It never increases lightweight alloy mass, you get a bonus to hull and to resistances. It may be small, but that small difference can possibly save you one day.
