Module Consolidation

Dev Team,
Can you please start to consolidate modules so that less fortunate ships can have more functionality.

Examples:
1. 1 planetary module that does both Surface Scanning and Approach planning

2. 1 Flight Assist module that does both Docking and Super Cruise Assist

3. 1 Mining module that does both Prospecting and Refining

I'm sure there are others. I was just thinking about how to consolidate the multitude of modules we need.

yes but these modules should be size 7 and weigh 140 tons at least

Most likely!!! It's like the size 7 Limpet module that can fit on the Federal Corvette and type 8 and above...

that size 7 module would be amazing at size 3

just think of how awesome that would be for all ships!!!

Since I've been back in the game, almost 1 week now, I've already done multiple refueling / repairs jobs. to the point I like to have the repair module on my ship at all times!

The less fortunate ships had two size 1 slots added when supercruise assist and the advanced docking computer were introduced (medium and large ships got one size 1 slot).

The planetary approach suite (and a dedicated slot to carry it) was added to all ships when Horizons launched (when playing Horizons - neither the module nor slot existed in the base game). The advanced planetary approach suite is the version of the module that permits landing on bodies with tenuous atmospheres, i.e. Odyssey.

If the modules were consolidated then the previously added slots would no longer have a justification for existence.

personally i am offended by the The advanced planetary approach module, it serves no other purpose than to break a part of the game when removed and all the elite youtubers will happily say new incoming ship has x number of modules even though one them is utterly useless beacuse nothing can be placed in this slot

They did and it still kept ships like the FDL worthless! Saying that as my favorite ship to PVP back in the day.

It's almost like technology advances make use of space more efficiently and big things become smaller. Isn't there a saying that all the computing power in the ship that went to the moon now fits in the palm of your hand? Should technology stop advancing because it is the 33rd century?

No, I am not sure you could find anything with the computing power of the Apollo capsules nowadays, anything with any computing power built in is way more powerful.

Should technology stop advancing because it is the 33rd century?
No but neither should the game be made even easier than it already is. For no good reason.

So your concern is that combining super cruise assist and auto land modules make the game easier? I hate to tell you this but it doesn't... It actually makes it more dangerous. You know how many videos there are out there of ships blowing up because the computer messed up while attempting to land? Quite a few. Not only that, but if you are in super cruise assist and you leave the game to do something else, there is a chance something is going to interdict you and you won't be able to react to it. Hence also more dangerous. Most of the time I have super cruise assist it's just so I can either A) Get somewhere faster by speeding up and letting computer drop me at right time (but still takes skill because you can overshoot if too fast) B) Convenience of being able to read Inara or forums if I am not worried about time (since super cruise actually slows you down to 75% of your speed). Auto land is an annoyance every time you are landing manually and it takes over. Only reason auto land is nice, is when I am trying to hurry up and dock to safety, after either a nature call or wife needs help with something. Super cruise and Auto land are convenience, not an "easy" thing. And we aren't asking that they be incorporated into one module size 1. Just have another module available that is size 2 and add the weights of the individual modules together... Give it a luxury price. And there you go... Balanced!

No.

My concern is that combining modules makes deciding what modules to use easier as it reduces the need to think about your choices.

On the whole I agree with what you say about fitting those modules not making things less hazardous but that was not my main concern.

Except there is no choice. There is just an order on which we take things. If there is no space for it the auto land isn't coming. A combined module would mean you still have to make a choice, except that choice means whether you take a combined module or for something else in that higher sized module.

If fitting the combined module involved a choice then fitting some or all of the existing modules require more choices as there are more of them. As I said the combined module makes that easier as there are fewer slots involved.
