Module Idea: Exploration Data Limpet Controller

Or similar name.

Function: Explorer uses the controller to send limpet with (portion) of his exploration data to Universal Cartographics headquarters (collection centre).
Data will be sold for i.e. 50% of the nominal value (without any Power Play bonus).

That way explorers can off-load their hard earned data even on very long expedition without big fear of losing them.

Losing data is the only thing that adds risk to exploration - so I'd prefer to keep things as they are.
The more data you have, the longer the expedition, the higher risk. And it jumps quite high when you are going to offload them. Even more if in open.
Some might find it unbearable ...

That said, the exploration fleet carrier variant is likely to have a UC contact, so you'll probably get your wish in December.
I'd rather not base my ideas on unknown features. We don't know yet whether it will be feasible and economical to go to explore far galaxy reaches with the Exploration FC.
Jump range: 500 (exploration might get more), no info on how often you can jump and how long/costly it will be to get fuel for 1 jump. And to go to Beagle you need about 130 jumps ...
Of course, if it will be economical, then this idea would be probably scrapped.

Anyway I don't expect such module would make it live before FCs.

If it is possible to get UC on a fleet carrier - and that's definitely not certain, then the "how feasible" question probably isn't a problem.

1) You don't need to bring the fleet carrier all the way with you - just buy one and park it somewhere outside the bubble (a couple of jumps will do) and you're at basically zero risk returning to it to hand in every now and then.

2) More dedicated (groups of) explorers are likely to cooperatively put a network of them around the galaxy pretty quickly, so just talk to the owner of the nearest one about getting access to their carrier. You might not personally want to jump a carrier out to Beagle, but I'm fairly sure an expedition will have put a bunch of them out there within a month of release.

When i read the title i somehow imagined a limpet that you bury into planet surface with your data - as a safe keeping / treasure chest before undertaking high risks
Of course, someone else could find and reclaim it... Yea - i know, stupid imagination.

Anyway, back to your idea for data-taxi-to-station... it will have to be a one of a kind limpet since the Sidewinder is the smallest vehicle that can fit a FSD.
So, it should be a special, one size 7 limpet controller, one class (A), weight 160t and it will be able to hold maximum 3 limpets (no cargo bay needed)
Yep, you guessed it - the limpet will basically be a stripped Sidewinder, with everything non-essential equipment/module replaced by fuel tanks.
