Very odd idea, but hear me out!
Some materials are just silly hard to find, which is both good and bad, good because it prevents everyone ever having the mod immediately, but bad because it's kind of a waste of your game time.
So, I suggest....
Module (or even entire ship) Recycling!
Basically, you take your ship to an engineer, , head to outfitting, select a non essential module(basically, all modules bar core modules, and planetary suite), and in addition to the sell, swap, etc, you get "Recycle".
This then breaks down the module in to some semi-RNG materials.
The type, and rating of the module is basically what determines the resources extracted from it.
The class determines how many materials you are likely to get.
It is a complete waste of money. But adds a new way to get materials.
Before confirming to recycling, you will be shown a list of all the possible materials you could get. But what you actually get is just RNG based on that list.
Recycling an engineered modules has a chance to refund some of material(s) used to craft it.
Not sure how to implement recycling of an entire ship, because all the Engineers I've been too have no shipyard.
But if they did, it can be done using the shipyard menu, and gains you loads of random materials.
But of course, you lose the entire ship.
The yeilds are based on ships mass, and class and rating of modules still equipped.
Odd one, but what do you think?
