Money-Making Question!

Greetings Commanders!

Let me get this out of the way first;
This is not a "Err merrr gerd! Thay nerf'd sothis, wahhhh!" thread. So, please, do read on.

I think I've kind of dug myself into a hole and I am struggling to get out!

I was doing okay money-wise for someone that hasn't got all that much experience with the game. I currently hold about 10 million in assets (I know, not much, I'm working on it).

The problem I am having, is breaking the 10 million ball. I can't seem to gain any decent rep' with the Empire, or money for that matter. I sank almost every dollar I have into a Keelback (shut up, I know..) purely because it can house a fighter, and I want that experience. It's fun and everything, but I struggling to get anywhere. I can't seem to net any decent, worthy income from trading random commodities I buy cheap. Which in turn, I don't have a great deal of cargo space either. Being in a Keelback and all. I found a few missions that all had the same goal, "go to a CZ, kill a boat load of these guys and we will give you 500K a mission".. I thought, that's not a bad idea, I'll stack 4-5 of those and make a little bit in money. I got there, the second I opened fire, I was obliterated by every ship in the area. Not even the guys on my side could help me, literally, within seconds, every hostile ship turned on me.

I tried bounty hunting. It was a great source of income when I started, as I was aiming for hundreds of thousands. Not millions. Anything worth taking down, can and will annihilate me.

I tried smuggling Imperial Slaves over to Federation space and sell them on the Black Market. I made a daunting 50K on near 100ton worth of Slaves.

Now, I could sell my Keelback, buy something else.. That's all well and good, but it doesn't fix my problem of actually getting somewhere. Am I going to have to grind 1K missions with the Empire to open up better jobs or something? Somebody please give me some advice!

I'm not looking for a Sothis type deal, I don't want to make 500mill in a couple hours. I want something that will in the end, make me feel as though I've earned it. But I also don't want 15K rewards either.. I'm well beyond that point.

Sorry for the wall of text, and if you actually read it, thank you.. if you can give me some tangible advice, I thank you again!

Go to Naitis, make 500 mil in a couple of hours, np

I literally just said I wasn't looking for a Sothis cash cow, there has to be some other way of making money without destroying the journey. Besides, your post wasn't exactly descriptive.. Go to Naitis and do what exactly? If I can make a few million and at least get my Keelback (or some other ship) to a decent standard, then i will take what I can get.. But I won't be banking 500mill off an exploit or something.

Well then, nevermind I guess :p

Haha! I know these is some reward update being looked into. Is there no legitimate way of making money right now?

And the system you mentioned, what is it that makes it a "500mill an hour" system? Missions? Trade? What?

You can make good easy money on mining. The Keelback isn't great for the job but not the worst. Classic bulk trading works too.

The bestt "legitimate way" to make money is getting a Cutter, fitting fully with cargo ranks and doing A <--> B trading, which is roughly 14-17M per hour, which isn't bad tbh since you save time on refreshing boards etc

Everything else is trully subpar and eye-scratchingly slow

He was talking about stacking skimmer missions. You can do these pretty easy with dumbfire missiles from a spaceship to which the skimmer are no threat, just pay attention to the security level of the base.

There is always a middle ground. It is not an exploit and not a cash cow if you do it "as intended", meaning you grab the missions that are there but don't stack 20 of them by mode switching (don't know if that is still a thing after the update).

As it was said: Mission rewards are looked into and seem to be bugged, meaning you could make money doing just normal hauling missions. Also, there are passenger missions that are one or two jumps for decent money. In my home system where I am allied with every faction I got 3.5 million to ferry one guy to the next door system. Not bad.

Regarding bounty hunting: You have to go to a HighRES with lots of security including Anacondas and stick to them like glue. Shoot what they shoot but only after shields are down and the target already has taken damage. Watch your fire and you will not get obliterated.

I think it is a planetside mission where you have to take out skimmers. Why they pay so much? Don't know, maybe it's kind of an "Anti Drone War" thing funded by some immensely rich do-gooder.

When I was starting out in ED and could afford to upgrade from a Cobra mark III to a Type-6 I started running "rares", rare commodities available only in small amounts, needing to be transported fairly long distances to be valuable. There are several good rares routes available online, you can go round-and-round earning 10-15 million per lap (about 3 hrs.). It sometimes takes longer because suppliers often drip out their product in small batches you must wait for. Get into an Asp-X ASAP for the legs and the cargo capacity.

This is the circuit I used, don't know how current this is but . . .

Is Naitis still working as pre 2.2 drop do you know?

What i did when i was in your situation or as i have just done in my second Cmdr Account (No Engineer Mods at all).

Buy into a small fighter, Vulture if you can stretch to it, remember insurance) if not a Viper/Cobra, go to a High Risk Res and sit on the tail of a Security Anaconda/Viper wing and when the shoot at a wanted ship, you get a few shots in on that target and you will get the bounty! a couple of hours can earn you 2 or 3 million, depending on how lucky you are with the NPC population.

In a week you can easily treble what you have now, and once you are into that money you can get on the next rung of the ladder with Traders and bigger passenger missions.

Good luck

Problem is his cash account...

I recommend syncing your normal activities with a CG or two.

Then you get the basic pay for doing whatever it was (trade, rare trade, CZ, BH or whatever), experience different jobs to what you might normally do, have a goal for your activities and maybe some RP motivation, plus a nice bonus at the end of the week that will run to several million.

It's not the best earner in the game, but I always at least try to stick my head in the door and do one run for any CG that I'm not politically/morally opposed to.

1) Get rid of the Keelback, get a Cobra MkIII.
2) Travel about 'til you find a system offering the missions that suit you.
3) Do those missions until you're rich enough to get the ship you want to buy.
4) Rinse & repeat from 2).

OP.
Get an A rated Viper Mk 3 and do some pew pew in haz res sites in a system controlled by ARISSA LAVIGNY-DUVAL. You can make a couple of million an hour. If haz res is too risky, try a high or low res site in the same system.

Good luck

Thanks guys! Some very helpful comments here.

I did look into Rare trade, but I wouldn't know a rare commodity if you jettisoned it into my face. Haha!

I am set for about 15mill on the Walter Waldo CG. Which I am eagerly looking forward to! I may just sell my Keelback, I do like the ship for some reason, perhaps it's her personality.. But I can't seem to get anywhere in it. I desperately want a Cutter, it has been my goal since the day I started playing! But I am a LOOOOOONG way off that yet. I may just climb back aboard my Cobra or perhaps find something a little better and run Empire missions to rank up. This way I am at least working toward one goal (that baron rank, haha!) and just hope a mission or two pop up that are worth some money. That system the MassiveD was talking about, is it an Empire system?

Is the Viper a good ship? I never tried it, I fell deeply in love with my Cobra, so I never touched it.
