So I've been inactive for, lets say since the release of the Krait and I've seen that they're adding the Fleet Carriers, I'm interested of course. What is currently the best way of making money? I've gotten enough to get the proper equipment and ships but I have no clue how to make money anymore.

heavy duty laser mining (2-3 medium lasers, minimum 9 collectors) at borann tripple ltd hotspot
robigo sightseeing missions to sothis
wing massacre missions, up to 50 millions per mission from an allied faction
exploration - but you need to map every terraformable you encounter plus all the earth like worlds, amonia world and water worlds

if you had no expectations you might like what you find out
if you already imagined your carrier in a certain way - you might be well beyond disappointment

I've seen a lot about this mining stuff. Is there somewhere that I can read that goes in depth about this.
you could probably find some stuff on reddit miners channel or on youtube
but basically you need at least a pyton (but better with a conda/t10/vette/cutter) equipped with a-rated prospectors, refinery, collectors, mining lasers, fuel scoop and fill the cargo with at least 80% limpets
then fire an prospector at a rock, it if shown more than 7-10% ltd - clean it up, let the collectors pick the fragments, check the refinery and drop the byproducts, periodically jettison everything that is not a limpet or a ltd (you will need to jettison some limpet too to make room for ltd eventually)
when you fill up or when you get bored or your time runs up, check inara for best sell prices on LTD - jump and sell
boring as hell initially, but it may grow on you

I think the best ships for mining LTDs are Cutter, Anaconda Python and T7 in that sequence, depending which one you have access to. A T9 can also do well, but not for beginners or guys that are inexperienced with that ship. There's not a lot of difference between T7,Python and Krait, but T7 is the cheapest.

Can I add a couple things?
When you are picking up LTD bits. Target fragments that do not have LTD in their makeup and put them on your "ignore list". That way the collectors will not pick them up and the refinery won't process them. Take weapons as whenever you start a new session pirates will attack you if you have anything in your hold.
Not to bad if you have the mining lasers on a toggle switch. Then you can put your feet up.
