Moral Compass

Do you have a moral compass in the game? Have you declined missions based on that compass?

Currently I find myself in a quandary. I have worked hard at boosting my standing with a controlling faction, to the stage now I am fully allied. Done this by countless data runs, even the odd 'kill x amount of pirates' types of missions but now I have follow-up missions requiring me to assassinate someone. I am reluctant to do these missions as I don't want to become wanted in the neighbouring system (which what will happen) - hell I don't want to fly around with the dreaded wanted tag at all.

I have always played this game with a my moral compass pointing in one direction. For example, I do enjoy bounty hunting - after all they are criminals right. But even then I will rarely take out a ship if the bounty is less than 10,000 CR. For staters, not really with the effort but in reality, in the back of my mind, I think it is just some poor smuck with lousy trigger control or something. About the only time I break that rule is the previously mentioned 'kill x amount of pirates' scenario, sometimes the low value ones are the only ones I can find!

Anyway, this got me thinking, I checked and it seems that at least half the missions available to me are illegal in some context. Is FDev purposely pushing players to step over the line, especially if they want to advance with a faction or gain rank. And am I the only one that does care about whether they are wanted or not? I have read here that some Commanders won't trade in Slaves etc so I guess not :D

My compass is deep south I complained a bit when I heard we get 2k credits for giving an escape pod to a SAR contact I'd find it more fun smuggle them into slavery for 6x that or dump them at the nearest black hole

No Slave Trading, unless it was to the CG that freed them, or the old Slave Smuggling Missions that were worded that it was emancipation
Ditto for Imperial Slaves, even though I work for the Empire <- It should be a responsibility of the Patrons of a system to provide the means for their citizens to pay off the debt, not export them.

This is from Player Faction lore

If I have the Space, I will bring back escape pods if I find them

No Civilian kill missions, Pirates hunting okay, Condottiere missions okay.

No selling out passengers.

Smuggling weapons and narcotics fine

On Opposed GC, don't switch sides to get both payouts

Favour Imperial Factions first, no preference after that.
No betraying imperial factions on mission counter offers, if not imperial depends on who the counter offer is for not the payment.

Sanctioned assassinations only

Flee from or Disable hostile bounty hunters who are after for bounties obtained in non imperial Jurisdictions, from things such as tip off leading to raid a surface outpost leading to bounties, or extra jurisdictional assassinations, when the target jumps away to where they are not wanted.

For my character, I don't so much have a moral compass, as a set of character traits:
  • Traditional Imperialist
  • Has a positive view of Imperial Slavery, having once been one herself
  • Hatred of unregulated slavery
  • Distrust of the Federation
  • Distrust Corporate States
  • Pragmatic
  • Has a romantic view of Freedom Fighters
  • Believes in giving back to the Community

It's usually enough for me to figure out "What would Inga do?"

Yeah my in game character has his set of morals down pretty pat, but some would question it. He won’t do slave trading but will dispatch another member of the Pilots Federation for perceived infractions and sleights.

My character's guiding principals:

1. Slight distrust of all powers (superpowers and Powerplay)
2. Will NEVER pledge to a political figure. Chain of command starts and stops with him
3. Assassination missions against military and criminal targets only
4. Will transport Imperial Slaves only if absolutely necessary. Not entirely comfortable with the concept, but it is understandable
5. Doesn't like to stick in one spot for too long. Don't want to give the impression of being available on a whim.
6. Avoid civilian casualties at all costs
7. When in doubt, stay out of wars.
8. Only favored faction is the Fuel Rats Mischief
9. Don't burn a bridge you might have to cross later. Translation: leave things on good terms whenever possible.
10. Only exception to rule 9 is for anarchy/criminal factions, leave those on unfriendly terms if you so choose.
11. Smuggling fun substances and weaponry is fair game
12. Don't accept counter offers on missions. Do the job you are being paid for. But complete optional mission parameters when possible.
13. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is
14. Never go anywhere without a knife
15. Question everything and anything, more information is preferable to less
16. Best way to keep a secret is to tell no one. Second best is to tell one other person. There is no third best
17. Hard for teammates to betray you if you fly solo.

That about covers it.

My character has a moral compass, however, many here would question it. All mission types are acceptable to my character. However, their must be a good reason to do it. Money, is not my driving factor, however, it helps.

edit - oops, there was a couple of rude words in the first one.

Xander would be:

* Federation Loyalist, still believes the system works for most people.
* Recruited to a Federal Navy para-military Corporation (EDF). Because Service Guarantees Citizenship!
* Will drop into a distress call USS and lend a hand regardless of the threat level.
* Will pickup an escape pod and rescue, because it’s not always about the money.
* Tries to do the ‘right thing’ especially when nobody is looking.
* Saves miners from harassment in a Haz-Res, because someone has to enforce the law - even when the pirate is only wanted for 10K and worth less than the missile cost.
* Former Imperial - on the run from Achenar. Nothing to do with slavery, (not another one of those!) just a particularly vindictive ex-wife in the nobility.
* A reporter for the Federation News Network, annoyed at the lack of real journalism in the Fed media.
* Not a big Hudson fan, hoping Winters wins the next race.
* Not a warmonger, but is currently following orders and doing his part in one of the nastiest interstellar wars he’s ever seen.
* Social, prefers to do things with others. Found in a Wing more often than not.

My moral compass is simple. I have none. I'll haul slaves, either kind, guns, drugs, palladium, gold, or anything else that makes me money. I'm quite good at smuggling but if caught, I pay my fine. That's just a cost of doing business. I also like to fight, but don't want a murder warrant on my head, so I hunt those who are wanted. Someone interdicts me, I immediately submit and go to combat stance. If they're wanted, which they likely are, my lasers have a nice meal on shields and then my multi-cannons dine on hull. But I don't accept kill missions. Although a RES or corrupted Nav beacon is tons of fun.

I have a moral compass which basically revolves around interactions with other players, be it in in game or on forums related directly to the game.
I left one power because their rhetoric and general behaviour were not to my tastes and joined another which is more banana friendly.
Mostly peaceful, would rather avoid a war and seek alternative means as opposed to killing everything in sight. Shoot at me though and Banana survival instinct kicks in...I either run or punish.
Does not trade in the misery of humans, no need as they make themselves miserable.
Does not like bullies, so not big fan of pirates or the 2 main superpowers(has a thing for the Blueberry Muffin, she has potential)...unsure of the Alliance, haven't annoyed me yet...and I heard they're Alien friendly.
Mostly helpful if requested, mostly unhelpful if demands are made.
Likes looking after innocent humans or those in need, is not xenophobic.
Not to be trifled with, or be made into a trifle...

Started career as wide-eyed optimist, with noble intentions a burning desire to explore new worlds, and do whatever needed to make a positive difference in the inhabited regions of the galaxy. After much hard work and 100,000 ly traveled, had been to SagA and back, to Colonia and back, had allies all over the bubble, was wanted or hostile to no one, and had started making good progress on outfitting the new Anaconda.

After a very long stint in the black, decided to switch gears from the isolation that was the normal preference and started working with other CMDRs , lending support to various factions for various objectives.

Hard to pinpoint when things changed, but becoming wanted for the first time after some incidental friendly fire, and having the system authority forces that had been taking out pirates side by side together, to instantly turn and engage with intent to kill was...jarring.

It was around this time, possibly the same CG, when it all changed. Was invited to join a wing to clear out a local HazRES. Shortly after dropping in, another wing dropped in and were apparenty friends with the leader of our wing and one of the others. That was when the trap was revealed, and it was six against two. Escaped with 10% hull, but other was not so lucky.

New passions replaced old, and sacrafices, compromises of character have been made. Ship is stronger, and log entries of new systems discovered and alliences made have been replaced with list of kills and hostile systems to avoid. Politics, massacre of passenger ships, sabatoge and elimination of enite wings of system authorities are the price for strength, skills, and PackHounds.

Still desire to be a force for good, but not sure if that route has been lost forever.

I role play most of my games and Elite is no different :)

I have been declining a lot of missions and I don't tend to cooperate with Federation or Empire. I almost didn't do Sirius permit :D

Not to inject religion here, as I am agnostic...

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Treat other people with the concern and kindness you would like them to show toward you.

The Golden Rule.

If it is not acceptable behavior or conduct in the real world, then why would it be acceptable in a game.

Just like the fine line between genius and insanity, I believe there is also a fine line between reality and fantasy.

Things I have seen on this forum gives me pause as to whether some few have crossed the line.

Then again, I question morality itself in a game to begin with.
