More Birds?

Specifically flying birds, maybe sometime we can get a dlc for those?

I work at an AZA zoo as a bird keeper and I care for a variety of raptors. Bald eagles, hawks, ravens, owls, vultures, and condors. We have flamingos as well (American and Chilean). Almost all of our birds (I think the only exceptions are our condors and ravens) are rehabbed or rescued birds that can't return to the wild and can never be released. Most of them have wing injuries or aren't flighted and so they live at the zoo. I think a DLC with birds that focuses on rehabilitation and education around birds and the threats they face would be awesome! Plus, California condors are critically endangered, and Andean condors are near threatened and facing population decline. Having these animals reproduce in captivity is very important to their species survival in the long run.

Plus I'm a sucker for owls, I just LOVE owls and would like to see some.

I would love more bird species too. Outdoor and walkthrough aviaries are awesome to see and zoos would be more incomplete without them. I also see a feature in the game of those Australian walkabout aviaries where guests can enter and feed the birds (usually budgies, cockatiels and lories).

I'm going to start off with species of birds from my home state list that I would like to see in the game:

  • Bald Eagle
  • Red-Tailed Hawk
  • Cooper's Hawk
  • Peregrine Falcon
  • Turkey Vulture
  • Great Horned Owl
  • Eastern Screech Owl
  • Snowy Owl
  • Sandhill Crane
  • Greater Prairie Chicken
  • Northern Bobwhite
  • Canada Goose
  • Wood Duck
  • Mallard
  • Blue Winged Teal
  • Great Blue Heron
  • Belted Kingfisher
  • Northern Cardinal
  • Blue Jay
  • Red-Winged Blackbird
  • Indigo Bunting
  • Painted Bunting
  • Baltimore Oriole
  • Northern Mockingbird
  • American Goldfinch
  • Scarlet Tanager
  • Downy Woodpecker
  • Red-Bellied Woodpecker
  • Red Headed Woodpecker
  • Pilated Woodpecker

I'm still disappointed in the lack of ground dwelling birds. There's plenty of critically endangered birds like the takehe, guam rail and the kakapo and various wading birds like the shoebill and heron species they could easily implement. I'm surprised they haven't done it still.

I wouldn't say their easy to implement especially compared to another big cat or crocodillian.

Aside from flying birds I would love a bigger and variable bird roster. Pelicans, storks, cranes, Kiwi, penguins and the rhea as final, missing ratite :) all these could easily be added as they are pretty common in zoos. So hopefully some more birds like these!

Yes, more birds. In order of preference:

I'd love to see free flying birds but definitely feel like that won't happen at this point. I accept that.

I'd love to see Walkthrough Exhibit birds that fly on looped animations, as well as some habitat appropriate ground-oriented birds. I still have hope for this.

However, there is no reason Frontier cannot introduce more habitat appropriate ground oriented birds, even if the Walkthrough Exhibits do not introduce loop-animation "flying" birds. I would be disappointed at not having smaller "flying birds" but I honestly feel it's not acceptable at this point that Frontier cannot put things like the Secretary Bird, Scarlet Ibis, Shoebill Stork, Kiwi and a Swan in the game. It doesn't have to be specifically those species, they're just my most wanted habitat appropriate birds. If they were able to design the red crowned crane, I just don't feel they cannot bring similar oriented birds to the game.

If we don't get at least the last section, I will be incredibly disappointed. The game is fantastic and I still have hope, and I'll still enjoy it even without more birds, but it will remain a source of disappointment if the only birds we get are the ones we have now.

I mean immediately in terms of species that shouldn't require the full on work of the aviary mechanic, I feel we need:

At least one Stork species (Marabou, white and/or shoebill)
A pelican species
Golden and Lady Amherst's Pheasants
Grey Crowned Crane
Guinea Fowl
An Ibis (preferably scarlet)
A spoonbill

Cattle egrets with specific ineractions with elephants, rhinos, water buffalo etc would be really neat too, but not as essential

I am still so hopeful for aviary capabilities or at least some more birds. I'd love to recreate the beautiful walkthrough jungle aviary at the Minnesota Zoo where all kinds of birds were visible and vibing together; it was such a cool experience. Here are some birds I would be THRILLED to have:

  • Roseate Spoonbill
  • Scarlet Ibis
  • African Crowned Crane
  • Shoebill Stork
  • Kakapo
  • Crowned Pigeon
  • California Quail
  • Golden Pheasant
  • Southern Hornbill
  • Great Hornbill
  • Vulturine Guineafowl

Flying birds even in a walkthrough exhibit habitat would be incredible, especially given the chance to connect the exhibits or have different shapes like domes.

I don’t really care that much for small caged animals and flying birds in zoo like eagles, but more big cage birds are needed, spoonbill, pelican, secretary bird, shoebill, swans, pheasants, guineafowl, grey crowned crane, ibis, lyrebird, victoria crowned pidgeon, roadrunners, kiwi, hornbills ect ect.

If you'd like to see more birds in Planet Zoo, participate in this new community-led wishlist! We just launched it a little over a week ago and it almost has 50 users! The more that particpate, the more chances we have getting feathered friends in PZ!
